No Reverse on a Auto

Hi all,

I have a 91 Auto
great car 80K on the clock garaged for 10 years so nice car.

Last year it went in to safe mode so could only access 3rd gear and slammed into reverse.
I searched, enquired visited loads of garages that had no idea, then finaly found someone who gave me some hope.
He sent the TCU off to be Refurbished as the solonides (Sorry if spelt wrong!) were destroyed - they couldnt get a 100% test on it but reached 99%
I accepted - he installed - the car ran perfect - Happy days… for 4 months !

4 Months later on the moterway, - Lack of power - miss fire - then into safe mode again (3rd gear only)
I pulled over into the services and called my trusty mechanic “Turn it off give it 10 mins and you never know it may reset”
It diddnt.
And whats worse I now had no reverse gear ?
The lever goes to the position well, the car makes the little beeping noise but reverse has disappered ?

I pushed it back and tried to drive it,
It randomly changed between 2nd and 3rd and felt awful - I pulled over and got a lift home with the AA
We plugged it in and it come up “throttle position switch” - I changed this and checked all oils.

The car is under cover and off the road waiting for someone to save it

Can anyone please offer me some advice - P.S. I am a rank amerture when it comes to mechanics especially with a GTO.

Many thanks Russ

Hi Russ,

I don’t know if this has anything to do with your problem, just relating to what a mate had go wrong with his. His started to misfire, was an N/A Auto too, couldn’t get gears, and I had to tow him with my GTO for about 3 miles. Yes, we are out in the sticks. When he took the car to an electrical engineer they finally came up with the ECU being faulty. Sent it to the ECU Doctor in Plymouth and now runs as sweet as a nut! Not sure how much it cost him but I hope you sort it.

Not saying this is your problem, just what we experienced!

Cheers Terry,
Tramission control unit was the problem last time, just seems werid it diddnt flag up when my mechanic plugged it in this time ?

I’m up for trying this just expensive and doesnt make sense as i done this less than 200 miles ago ?

Cheers for the reply :relaxed:

My first guess was going to be ECU. Post up more details about your model and your location. There may be someone near by with a spare ECU you could try to see if it is the cause of the problem.

Thanks Max,

Im based in Hedge End, Southampton, Hamshire

Its a 1991 3.0 V6 (Non Turbo) Auto - Import
earlier type ECU - I’m told
All the paper work is at home ill have a look later if any further info on the car is needed

Its not road legal at the moment so i cant drive it any where but i would be more than happy to visit someone or talk over the phone

Much appreciated

The other option would be to take the ECU out and open it up. The common problems with these ECU’s is leaking capacitors. You can usually see/smell signs of them leaking.

You Know i thought that earlier, Probably like you say a good place to start.
It is pretty much brand new but you never no…

Job for the weekend that one,

Ill let you know how i do.

Thanks For the Reply

Hi All,

just about to remove the Gear box ECU (THE ONE ON THE FLOOR NOT THE ONE UPRIGHT I HOPE )?

Does any one have a working one i could try to see if this is the problem to why i have no reverse gear ?
Im willing to pay for someones help if needed.

Also if this is a problem does anyone have one for sale or know a good place that can recon it ?

Many thanks,
Russ

It the one that is against the engine bay firewall not below the heater unit in the dash

Cheers Rob

cheers Rob

its out now…

So its just what to do with it

Anyone know of a good place to test ECU’s ?

ECU Doctor http://www.the-ecu-doctor.co.uk/

Cheers Dude,

Ive emailed them as on thier site it says they do not work on gear box ECU’S ?

Ill see what they say

Hi I believe he has done a few for members but does not advertise this service as cant test them, mine got to a stage of banging in reverse seems a common problems but that’s still going fine as far as i know so the bang in reverse prob ain’t the problem. Good luck Dave

Ok

So got a ECU from the ECU Doctor, It isnt 100% but a cheap way to see if my Engine ECU was the problem.

It diddnt work.

Still no reverse gear !

Just for those new to reading this i need help,

Car was stuck in 3rd only (Slaming into reverse) 1 year ago - i sent Gear box ecu off for repair - problem solved - 4 months later driving down the motorway and had miss fire followed by 3rd gear only then wierdly no reverse,
It makes the beeping nosie, Shows up on the dash and even lowers the Revs like it used to when you put it in reverse, it just dosent go anywhere ?
Ive had both ECU’S out and the Gear box looks fine (Pictures if you need)
The engine one had some liquid coming from one part (See pics above)
So this led me to the start of this message.
With ECU Doctor.

im stumped… Do i now look to the gear box ?
Or send the Gear box ECU off again !

Its just if the gear box went i would of surely heard a clunk clunk bang or something on the motorway ?

Just seems electronic to me

Someone please help im at my witts end now…

Just a thought, have you changed the auto box oil and filter? I knew someone on here that had a problem with his auto box, did a few things to it but reconed changing the o&f help immensely. Not saying this is the problem, just trying to cover all angles.

Terry :sunglasses:

I have checked the oil, But havent changed it ?

Could that stop it from engaging reverse ?

worth a try i suppose… Ive never changed the oil or filter before is it a local sorce oil and filter or special for GTO’S do you know ?

Thanks for our reply

The oil can be obtained from Rob (@GSXRKID) or Opie Oils. However the filter is from Rob so might as well get the oil too :+1:

Hi All i think ive had enough now !

Gear box ECU has been checked by Avlec
Engine ECU has been checked by ECU Doctor

spoken to transmission specialist who said “Yeah bring it in but will probably be a overhaul on the gear box… £1300 mate”

Im at my wit’s end, i’m not a mechanic and haven’t got £1300

Any ideas or should i just advertise it as it is and see what i get ?
