1991 twin turbo

Hi My Name is Phil and I own this 1991 imported TT GTO. I bought the car approx. 8 years ago and it ran perfectly for the first 5 years until the cam belt tensioner failed and made a mess of the engine. I took it to a main Mitsubishi dealer who repaired it and all was well until they took it for a test drive and there was I fire in the engine bay. Needless to say there were quite a few discussion between me and them but the outcome was I got the car back and was refunded. I had the car taken to a local garage who I know and bought a replacement engine. The guy who awns the garage had already done some work on the car for me so they knew each other. To be fair he did a great job of re building the engine and once completed I took it to a 4 wheel rolling road and it was running perfectly. All was well for 18 months until the engine developed a miss fire, only running on 4 of the 6 cylinders. Back it went to the main dealers who advised the ECU was at fault quoting over £600 for replacement. I sent the ECU to a company to have it checked and they returned with a certificate saying no faults found. Main dealer re-fitted but still said ECU. Again I sent it to be checked and explained the problem to the company. they ran the ECU for 4 hours but could not find any faults. Back it went to the dealer who re-fitted it. They had the car for 6 months but eventually admitted they did not know what was causing the misfire. I had the car delivered back to my friends garage to see if he could resolve. So far he has fitted NEW PLUGS, NEW PLUG LEADS, 3 NEW COIL PACKS, NEW IGNITION MODULE, NEW FUEL PUMP, fuel tank has been checked, Compression has been checked, ECU has been checked. An ECU from a different car has been tried but mine but the fault the same suggesting its not an EUC problem. I’m assuming it must be a loose or bad wire connection resulting in the fire 5 years ago. If anyone out there can offer any advise assistance of who or where I can go next I’d really appreciate it. I’ve had a lot done to this car and it has been spoilt since I bought it. Really need it back now don’t want to scrap it. Thanks Phil

Hi Phil Welcome to GTOUK :sunglasses: Sorry to hear you are having problems still .

Where abouts in the country are you based and who have you tried garage wise to find the fault , with this info it would be easier to advise where would be best for you

As you know too well by now you can keep throwing money trying to track down faults when a specialist should be able to do it quicker without the expense

Regards

Welcome along. Sounds like you’ve been run around the houses some! :frowning:
As asked earlier where in the uk are yiu

Phil,

I had a problem with my mk1 following an engine rebuild. I had a slight irregular misfire and what felt like lag when accelerating. I put in a new coil pack and power transistor unit, which appeared to cure the misfire - but I still had lag. I then bought a reconditioned mass air flow meter and installed that - and it seems to have cured the lag. Might be worth considering?

John.

Out of intrest Phil , what were the compression readings you got ?

Craig :grinning:

Thanks John, mentioning a mass air flow meter I had to replace one on a Scooby I had a few years ago as that was running really rough and it cured the problem then. Thanks for the tip i’ll give it a try.

Phil

Craig,
I live near Chester and the dealer was a Gallagher’s in Sandycroft. They were the ones who said it was the ECU originally but as mentioned I had it checked twice but could not find any issues. To be honest the dealer was a waste of time they are more interested in just servicing new vehicles. It is currently in a friends garage but he’s tried all of the things I mentioned but can’t sort so now I need to move it but just not sure where too. I could bring it home but it would then sit on my drive which is not the best option. I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks
Phil

HI live near Chester

You’ve got Eurospec down Guildford way , they do a recovery service and could collect . They know an awful lot about these cars that they have picked up over the years , a lot of the guys on here swear by them

Thats a pain, mine just started running on 2 cylinders since wednesday aswell lol. Sounds like a similar problem.

Do you know what cylinders are not firing? I checked mine and it was cylinder 4-6 by just removing the ht leads while running, seeing if they were sparking.

Ordered new a coil that should solve my problem tomorrow.

I had twice same issue i ended uo changing everything as @CDMH mentioned i took it to eurospec which i was pleased with thier service
Once was turbo pipe loose and once timming skipped because hydroclic tentionser being loose
