I have a brand new unused alloy crankshaft pully for the mk1 tt thats the type with the v belt and ribbed belt, NOT the 2 ribbed belt on the later ones.
Truth was when my engine was rebuilt i forgot i had the thing in the cupboad. So anyone that wants the lightened ally one here is a new one.
I know i got it from America about 3 years ago but its not from 3sx , i think it might have been a company called Supercar Engineering .
Anyway totally forgot how much i paid for it £150? Rob will have an idea what is a good price to ask for this .
pmsl Tony do you read every post on here mate? lol ffs
Well mines is new never been on car :)… ok as regards whether they are worth buying or not there is fors and against here in uk. In USA they seem to like them … i know one guy only in uk that has used the very same one on his car for 3 years withj no issues at all , if i had not forgot i had it it would have been on but reasearch it a bit and make your own decission, they are if nothing else a lot lighter.
My mk1 TT pulley delaminated a few months ago. It happened over winter so I left the GTO off the road and waited for the snow to seemingly never thaw. Once it did I got under the car and checked it all out.
Rather than pay well over the odds for an OEM pulley I searched around. Didn’t know that Amber Performance had them on their site for circa £100 (if I remember correctly).
Could only ever find the newer style (two x ribbed belts) so ended up buying one of the newer style from ebay and tried to get the pulley modified. The guy I gave it to used a lathe and did the best he could but it was expected not to work as well as required so I never fitted it. Explained the situation to another guy I know and let him check out the modified ebay pulley and he agreed it probably wouldn’t work. He then went on to tell me that he has a workshop with a lathe and could source a block of aluminium and make one from scratch.
I gave him both the delaminated OEM pulley and the modified ebay one. He didn’t realise the ebay one was an underdrive pulley and so the block of aluminium he sourced was the right size for that pulley (underdrive) and not the OEM size.
He did an awesome job making the pulley and I have had it running for a couple of months now with no problems at all.
If this pulley had popped up a few months ago I would have snapped it up. £50 is a very good price for something that I couldn’t source myself (ie, outwith this club).
If the pulley listed above is OEM size then it’s a simple swapover, if it’s an underdrive pulley (smaller than OEM) it will require a shorter alternator/air con belt (I’ll need to double check the size).
There’s a theory that the solid cast aluminium pulleys could damage something as they don’t have the anti-vibration rubber layer on the pulley but as said the Americans run these pulleys on many cars. As far as I’m aware the car runs just as well as the OEM.
I wasted £60+ on trying to modify something to make it fit when I had a mate that could make one very easily.
To save all that hassle these pulleys are ideal for a mk1 GTO owner that wants to replace their crank pulley with minimal hassle.
Just my thoughts. Good luck with original sale and the hijacked sale
It’s only a heartache trying to source a mk1 pulley without paying the £300 price tag for the OEM pulley, although as I said Amber Performance have some on their site which are OEM sized so they should work exactly as the OEM pulley does.
As for weight, there is a massive difference between the OEM pulley and the aluminium pulley. I guess there will also be a slight difference between the OEM aluminium pulley and the underdrive aluminium pulley.
I don’t know how it all works but I reckon it should ‘free up’ power/torque as the engine doesn’t have to waste as much energy rotating the pulley. Though in saying that, once rotating, a heavier pulley will retain it’s angular momentum while it is spinning whereas the lighter pulley will slow down quicker. With all that said, I have no idea if the belts in contact affect this at all and if a lighter crank pulley can actually improve the overall performance.
In terms of reliability, I can’t see any reason why a solid aluminium pulley would have a negative effect when compared to a much heavier pulley with a thin rubber layer in the middle. However, the rubber layer is there for a reason but even with a rubber layer it is still a solid pulley rotating as a whole but maybe someone else can expand on that.
Also, I doubt there would be that many for sale if it does cause damage. If Amber Performance sell them then they must be fine. I’m not just talking about the GTO pulley but if you search on ebay you’ll find lightweight crank pulleys for a huge range of cars. I definitely don’t compare it to the cheap +bhp chips on ebay. It’s a mechanical part and it does the job.
A lightened flywheel would have more significant effects on the performance than the crank pulley (in my opinion - that can’t be backed up with proof  )
ok quick note to the above, nope mine is not an Ebay item and yes its the same size as the Mitsi one and yes purpose made for the earlier v belt and ribbed power steering belt. So a straight swap with locating hole for dog pin.
