Just had two quotes from the above, Footman James is a new quote & Sky is a renewal. How can two brokers be so far apart on price, I wont bore you with all my details as everyones circumstances vary. Needless to say: 1992 Mk1 Twin Turbo
Footman James:
Voluntary Excess £250
Windscreen Excess £50
Breakdown Cover: ( Included )
Agreed Valuation: ( Included )
Well we must owe you a pint or 3 Julian, Steve’s renewal came though from Sky the other day, £617, gone up from £500 last year.
Phoned Footman James and asked about the Classic Car policy, it fits perfectly with the age of our car and the low mileage we do…
£275.00
Snatched their hand off and phoned Sky to canel from renewal.
I should add we have been loyal to Sky for a good few years, but that kind of saving can not be sniffed at.
I told Sky the reason for not renewing and given the quote I had, and probably knowing it was a Classic Car policy, they didn’t even attempt to better their quote.
Thanks again Julian for posting up your findings, we’ve SAVED a good few years membership fees there haven’t we
Sky have always been really good for me but that is a huge saving, over 50% cannot be sniffed at.
What are the catches, if any, like NCB not building up, insured as 2nd car, really limited mileage etc? Mine’s up for renewal soon but being an import with a list of mods I’m not sure I’d qualify for Classic insurance - even though I’m only doing 4-5k a year at the moment.
I’m not entirely sure Adam, ours just fitted the bill, maybe Julian might know more.
Ours is an import though which wasn’t a problem, but mods I suppose could be depending on what they are, we declared FMIC which was OK.
Best thing to do is give them a ring when you are due and go through it with them, you never know, don’t forget to mention being a member of GTOUK when you do ring

They will not do engine power type mods ie bigger tubs etc, but i declared FMIC, after market wheels, custom front bumper etc & everything was fine, they dont need NCB but in my case thats not a problem cos i also run a Passat as my everyday car & use my bonus on that, i declared mileage of 3k & did 1.5k last year so not a problem for me. My saving was £354.95
My insurance is due very soon and so I thought I’d have a look at FJ’s Classic policy - I fall at the first hurdle as mine is a 1999 and it needs to be more than 15 years old - here’s a list of must have’s for FJ Classic policy to help:-
The vehicle is over 15 years of age
The vehicle must be garaged at night
The vehicle is being used for social domestic and pleasure (including commuting) only
The vehicle has not been modified from the manufacturer’s standard specification
The vehicle is not a grey or parallel import including US imports
The vehicle is not valued at more than £50,000
The vehicle is not a van, pickup, motorhome or any other commercial vehicle
All drivers hold a Full UK driving licence and have done so for a minimum of 5 years
No drivers have made any claims or had any accidents in the past 3 years
All drivers must be aged between 25 and 74
No driver has more than one fixed penalty speeding conviction
UK post codes only (excluding Northern Ireland)
The vehicle is owned and registered to yourself
No driver is employed in any of the following occupations:
Entertainment, Radio or TV presenter
Celebrity
General Dealers
Courier or Delivery drivers
Debt collectors
Money lender
Professional Sports persons
Unemployed persons
I’ll just have to keep mine another 3 years to make sure I get well priced, reasonable insurance . I’ll still try them though, as Sky have given me the usual ‘Sky’ high opening renewal quote. Like others, I find their service good but wish they’d find more competitive insurance companies who give a reasonable quote first time but then that’s the industry I guess.
Do we have any ‘celebrity’ members, suppose we all are with our cars eh!

so unemployed people aren’t allowed to have a classic car :?
Thought I’d give an update on my insurance, which may help those with ‘younger’ cars like mine. Despite my thinking I couldn’t have a classic policy as my car was less than 15 years old, I gave FJ a try and they covered my baby on classic policy, based on my car’s merits alone Comparatives are:-
Footman James
Voluntary excess 100
Windscreen excess 50
Breakdown cover Included
Agreed value Included
Cost £457
Sky
Voluntary excess 300
Windscreen excess 70
Breakdown cover extra
Agreed value - no longer available for any car
Cost £617
Basically, shop around but give FJ a try and see what they can do, you may be surprised.
The key for me was the agreed value, as she is a low mileage minter and Sky just don’t do AV anymore.
had a result again
Renewal just come through from Footman James £202.30p
with breakdown included well pleased thats £30 cheaper than last year and i still have the £7000 value on it
footman James wouldn’t insure mine as the declared bhp will only allow a 10% increase on stock whereas mine was close to 50% from stock. So are all you guys running no/minimal mods?
Thats the conversation i had back in January with them Gavin .
Really helpful guy i spoke to but he said the underwriters had cut right back on there performance related upgrades when i quoted the current spec he said it was far too much than they would cover .
Looking at the figures coming back though they are putting some amazing deals together for stock cars 8)
Sky got my business this year , best quote by far for my needs
