Looks like a script kiddie managed to get an auto emailer program on the server, using a security vulnerability in OpenX, the banner software.
This caused the mail log to grow rapidly filling the partition, which in turn stopped SQL from running, thus the forum was down.
I have disabled the banners for now and put the code in a not accessible area.
I will take a look at getting the banners back as soon as I can, assuming they have fixed the security problem in a newer version.
