After some work on my car, and kind help from Evil Rob. I am at a point with my GTO that I am reasonably happy with. Although many issues still persist, the car is working and driving ok. So I have upped my membership (hurray!)
And here are some pics of my gto, which if anybody recognises please let me know. Its a bit of a Dog and needs some restoration but I got it for 2k and spent 800 on bigger turbo’s (only 13g’s don’t get excited) new fluids, cambelt change and auxiliaries, new rad, new y pipe and reducer. It still has issues when revving at only half boost (on the stock gauge) where the revs jump up and down abit, like its having a hard time revving. Although there may still be some boost leaks somewhere I am leaning at the moment towards a TPS issue. As occasionally when coming off the gas there is a slight lurch that pulls me forward abit. Based on my experiences of messing with my previous vehicles TPS and getting similar results. I will test the tps when I can. After that I’m inspecting and likely replacing all the lower arms and bushes to give the car a refreshing lease of life. Then probably all the suspension. Though I suspect I will need to pull some overtime to get the cash up for that one.
In the mean time if anybody has any advice or comments I will appreciate it. At the moment I am searching high and low for a replacement y pipe to bov pipe as mine is perished and cant find a decent 34mm aftermarket. Also I have bought an aftermarket bov and pressure gauge so I can test / install and learn what the hell I am doing with a turbo car.
I really like the white ones, that looks great, I would look at the tps first. Let us know if that doesnt sort the problem and Im sure you will get plenty more suggestions.
The front wings, headlamps and bump have had a really naff respray though guys & gal’s. Need to look into getting that sorted when I’m finished with mechanical. Stripped the intakes off yesterday to fit an after market BOV, tested the turbos wastegates under pressure as the rear turbo was undone from its core to move it around enough so the oil return pipe would reach the sump. Found the rear turbo opens much later than the front one. So out in the cold frosty weather I go to rebalance both the wastegates to the factory setting. Hopefully this was the problem with the irregular revving at certain boost conditions. I still need to adjust the tps as there is a definitely lurch when releasing the gas sometimes, am I 90% certain this is tps. But my knowledge of Gto’s is just beginning.
Rebalanced my turbo’s as my rear turbo wastegate was opening at around 8psi and shutting at 14, where as the front was setup by Evil Rob at 6-9psi. So I adjusted it to match the front. Messed around with the TPS it was adjusted abit incorrectly but the multimeter was indicating it was working. I’m still messing around with it but…
… the rev gauge still flicks up and down up @ half - 3/4 throttle. Full throttle and full boost for the most part is ok. I am happy at this junction that I have, on stock turbo pipe work, except y pipe and TB reducer, minimal if any boost leaks. I have replaced several other vacuum, boost hoses with fresh silicone ones. So now I am suspecting fuel and spark. I have new ngk platinum plugs and it looks like the fuel filter is new. I’m going to @GSXRKID next week with the car if he will have me for some goodies and his opinion. But would like anybody else who may have any idea to chime in if they can. I am told maybe the fuel relays might be naff. Thoughts?
Also I will take a video later of the rev gauge and post a tube link.
another clue, today I started the car and start driving more or less immediate, where as usually I leave my car to warm up abit. Under the same low rev, 3-4th gear half boost conditions, no jumping in revs. So being cold effected it for the better. Any idea?
Hi mate! My name is Petar. You have nice car. I really like this model. I’m new in this forum. I’m a new owner of GTO. I bought before 1 month. I need for help because MOT expires this month. I need for service before next MOT. I’m living in Cambridge. Do you know where can I go?
I never take my car for service in Cambridge or surrounding area’s, I do all the work myself. I know a few guys in a few garages local to me that might be able to help. Maybe we could meet and take a look at your car to see what needs doing before I point you in any direction. However for GTO’s, everybody recommends Eurospec at Guildford as the servicing experts. So give them call also.
Probably a bit late, given the original post was a while ago, but I had similar running issues, with the RPM jumping when it occured.
It was the PTU playing up.
Worth a look. There is a test procedure in the manual.
Marty
Yeah it was the PTU in the end, but this thread has seen new life since Petarfam messaged here. My ptu worries are over, no I have a leaking exhaust and possible crap 02 sensor. GTno worries
