Gear linkage

i have a 1994 GTO had a engine put in but i have a problem selecting the gears so it was sugested that the link between the gear stick and gear box could be adjusted when i attempted this it did not change any smoother and it came loose i am at my whits end because i am scard to drive it incase the gears come apart i live on the Wirral so does anyone know a good mechanic who does not mind playing with the GTO as a few garages just look at you and think you are mad for having one of these cars any help would be appreciated thanks Dean

When was the gear box oil last changed?
@DavePerky @ScottMR you guys chatted about this recently I seem to remember

Your right Steve may make a difference but from the tone of his voice ( if you get me) sounds more serious. Gearbox oil will only help with friction unless of course it don’t have much oil in it at all? Have you checked your levels? Drain a small amount of oil out and see what the condition is like, colour etc.
I used an addative will try find the link it’s expensive but works.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271920595757

Cant help not changed mine yet doing it on the 12th and my gearbox is silky smooth just doing it as a preventative measure and routine maintainance

How bad is it, how it was before and what work have been done? I had an issue with gears before, found out that one bolt for the shifter cable bracket in the engine bay was missing, so whole thing was wobbly. To me sounds like something is loose/missing or even damaged, as you said you had engine installed so something might gone wrong. If you remove the intake hoses you gain good access to the cables and shifter assembly. Check everything, bolts, nuts and bushings. You could adjust cables like i did too, but you need to have a good shifter mechanism or it wont do any good.
