This should be in the Insurance group I know but I need a quick response! Sorry!! Please don’t hate me
Just phoned Tescos for a quote on a GTO TT, they want to know if there are any modifications to the car, i thought well i best be honest and told them there is a different exhaust on it. My mistake it seems, they want exact BHP figures and percentages of increased performance before giving me a quote!!
So… do you keep such things quiet and just hope for the best or what?? My first hurdle in GTO world… gotta get over it!
Chris,
I’m sure you’ll also find Tesco insist on a Tracker. Someone put that on the insurance section, and when I got a quote online 'cos I was bored at work, I got a screen up saying “Due to the make and model of your car, we require an approved tracking device fitted” and they had a list you had to chose from.
Also, I was thinking of buying a tuned GTO from GTO.1 so I asked him about insurance, and I quote froma pm:
“hi.im only 23 with 3 yrs ncb .i have all the body mods declared but only the induction and exhaust declared (they arnt fussed about any of the other mods unless it puts the boost psi up).im paying £1250 fully comp with tescos.hope this helps
steve”
Which backs up what I said on the AON post about them saying something different each time you ring.

Chris always been honest as you may pay dear if you have a crash and your insurance company comes out to inspect the car.
They will do anything to get out of paying you the money.
I know there are ways around everything but is it worth it.
Your also better off not listening to what other people say they paid as it will just mess your head up. I’m 34 and paying around £800 fully comp (Protected). But then someone will come on here and say they are only paying £400 for the same type of quote. I have even phoned companies up that have been recommended on here to be told that they don’t insurance that type or car.
Just get a list of insurance companies and get phoning. Hopefully one will quote a good price for you.
did you know big insurance companies have lie detecting software to analyse the stress levels in your voice and inform the operator… scary…
Any way its best not to lie as you will lose out in the case of an accident. and daves advice of making a list and calling them all really works well i started with qoutes of £2000 and ended up insuring the car for £750… and i’m only 25
It all depends on the exhaust I’m afraid, but some general idea of BHP
Just back section + 10BHP
Back section and De-cat + 15BHP
Full straight through system + 20BHP
These are probably on the conservative side and based on Turbos. If you only have a rear section you could even tell them that -
“It doesn’t alter the total power output of the car, just smoothes the delivery of the power to make it more driveable, gives it a nicer exhaust note and looks better than the standard one at the back. The only reason it was changed is because the standard ones cost twice the price of the aftermarket exhausts.”
That might baffle (excuse the pun) them and keep the insurance down to normal. Perhaps you could argue that because the car is louder, it’s more likely to be noticed by idiots about to pull out of junctions, and because the exhaust is cheaper than a standard one, it’ll cost less to replace/mend in a rear end shunt, therefore lowering the premium. Argue with them at their own game mate.
Steve (PS let me know how you get on, as I really need to declare the rest of my mods to Tesco aswell)
grrr… i am getting fckd square in the arse because i have no NCB. I have made no claims, ever. But for one reason or another I have never been with one insurer long enough to build up NCB. So… now I am paying dearly for that. I am nearly 28, about to get a GTO, and for some ODD reason the quotes are more than what I got when i started out on this whole mission a couple of months back… Looks like i will be forking out the best part of 2k to get insured
Don’t know if I am too late but have you tried Bell Direct 0870 549 2000. Insured Simon’s Supra with NCB (though he is over 30) for around £650.00 on an accelerator policy which gives him 30% after 10 months, this includes breakdown cover. I may be transferring my car over as my insurers won’t do jap imports now, only existing customers if their underwriters says thats OK.
I know this should probably be placed in the insurance section… but as a few of our members may remember - I’m in the Motor Trade and specialise in Jap Imports (mainly MPV’s & 4x4’s although we’ve got a couple of mr2’s, mx5’s, supras etc.)
The insurance company we recommend is Osborne & Sons. We had a call from them aqround 5 months ago and they were obviously on a sales pitch, but they more or less told us that they could beat any genuine insurance quote for any of our customers. Several people who’ve bought from us and insured with them have said they got some good deals - in one case a quote of over 450 pounds CHEAPER than Tesco’s for a Toyota Lucida. - … It may pay to get a quote, you never know…
