My old GTO was my primary and only car. When I eventually blew the thing up I bought a citreon TD to get around in.
Now dont get me wrong - its a hateful car. However I want to keep it as my ‘primary commuting’ car since its great on fuel … the saving’s about 250 a month
So … I now need to insure my new GTO TT as a second weekend car … probobly on a limited milage policy.
What are my best options ? Someone in the pub ( in there as always … ) told me that I would loose all my no claims bonus for a second car. Apparently it is only valid for one policy - and I will need to build up another NCD in a new policy … sounds like rubbish to me. Any thoughts ?
Also - assuming the above is not true - who provides good insurance for a 32y/o ( with lots of points  ) on limited milage policies ? Im also thinking about putting Claire on the policy … but she’s only 24 and passed her test only a year ago … so the price might be prohibitive on that one.
Im open to suggestions - any advice from people running more than one car is welcome !
I have two car policies. The bloke in the pub was right, as the insurance co’s will try and take your no claims bonus from you for a second policy. No amount of haggling with the South African call centre operative would let me get away with it - remember they are paid to read from the “script” - so will not deviate.
What you can get however is a letter stating that you have amounted a bonus with them on a single policy - addressed to you - not the new insurance company. I know it amounts to the same thing as a no-claims bonus note, but they call it something different. My new insurer understood this way of working and took my business on. Sensibly, he was based in the UK
Fight the good fight - and keep to the line - " I the driver, have amounted the bonus - not the car / policy. I will be driving one car or the other - so there is no risk of “me” pranging both cars at the same time" As for a second named driver on one of the policies - he /she will have loaded you policy anyway with his/ her driving record - so will not come into the equation of “your” bonus.

Adam,
As well as the GTO’s I run an Astra also.
I have run 2 cars for many years now.
The thing about the No Claims is correct.
My GTO’s are on a policy with AON.
They were not Interested in NCD-Only in me been over 30 with a relatively clean driving record.
Limited milage policy.
Do require a Cat 1 Thatcham Alarm but what else is new!
Give them a try.
Number is in one of the other posts I believe_if you can’t find it I will dig it out for you.

Totally true about the NCB my friend! I was very fortunate that I’ve had 2 cars for almost 5 years now … so have 2 policies … one with 8 years NCB and the other with 5 yrs NCB … useful when you need to insure 2 cars.
Good Luck … but definitely use the NCB on the expensive policy … i.e. GTO
As a word of warning … they don’t care about primary and secondary policies … they are both independent so its up to you to be sensible and use the NCB where it is most effective and to build it up on the new policy for the cheap car!
i am thinking about this whole 2nd car carry on for next year. SO…if you have an accident on the GTO policy for example, can you then just re-adjust the policies accordingly, and move you NCB from the 2nd car to the GTO the following year??? and more or less no questions asked??? or does the fact you have had a claim regardless hinder you??? :?
You can move your NCB around to suit you.
The difference is if you make a claim your Basic premium will go up.
This also applies to protected policies-part of the insurance con.

I ask because I’m soon gonna have 1yr NCD on the Astra, and 4yr NCD on the GTO. We want to get a 2.3 VTec Prelude for Bex, and to be able to do a 3yr/2yr split of the NCD across both policies would suit us better than a 1yr/4yr split.
Alternatively, can you combine the 1yr and 4yr to make a 5yr NCD, and then start the other policy from scratch? This is because Tesco.com online quote worked out better with no NCD than with 1yr NCD (introductory offer I assume?
[quote]Does anyone know if you can split your NCD?

I have never heard of been able to do that and I have been running 2 cars for a long time now.

Sorry Steve,
Can’t combine or split … they are two totally independent policies …
… and the bit about a claim will apply to both policies as they will want to know when you appply for new insurance if you ahve had a claim in the last 3 years … be careful with this one.
If however, you are simply renewing a policy with a company … they in theory do not ask you that question on renenwal because they assume that you are talking about the same policy ,… so logically … they should know about the claim already!! So you may only have to declare the claim on the 2nd policy … but be careful again!!
seems to be the way ahead
insurance is a pain and premiums seem to be calibrated on the premise that if the underwriter got a shag the night before then the premiums go down :!: :!: :!: :!: when i tried to get insured for the gto it varied between £1200 top wack and 375 lowest
guess which one i took :?:
this is even cheaper than the 4.0ltr cherokee i’m running/selling
good luck and keep me posted on which way you decide to go :!: :!:
