Gto running problem help needed

hi all, i hope someone might be able to help, i have a mitsubishi gto twin turbo which has been stood up for a while i have finaly got round to getting it all up and running and on the road, ive just put a stage 2 clutch in it from evil empire moted and taxed it, now the problem is its misfireing and kangarooing under load, its ok if your using a 1/4 throttle but as soon as you put your foot down or even half throttle its misfireing under pressure so ive just put on a coil pack and new spark plugs still the same, i gave it a good run still the same, mods are a hks exhaust, decat, filter, hks boost contoller, hks fcd, and a few other bits, has anyone had the same problem or any input as to what you think it might be, any help would be much appreciated thanks.

That could be several things, make sure you have no boost leaks, do you have a bov fitted? That is where I would start looking first. Any dash lights when it happens, battery etc.

Neil.

hi neil thanks for the reply, no lights when it misfires, it did have a check engine light when ticking over but its lost that now, and yeah it does have a blitz dump valve on it,

also forgot to mention it revs perfect when ticking over stationary

Search on here for the Fuel Realay mod as it sounds like its that…

Cheers Rob

hi rob, the plugs i ordered off you came this morning so as i said i fitted the plugs and coil its still the same, i know you mentioned the ecu when i spoke to you on the phone, just trying to get all the possibilities on the table at the moment so i can see where to start

Yeah look at the ecu, its often the caps. If you take it out often you can see if they have leaked. This could be anything but look at all the easy to do jobs first.

Where abouts do you live, there maybe a member or garage who could help?

Neil.

we are bournemouth area in dorset, so im not sure but i dont think theres anyone good with gtos in my area

right have just got the ecu out and to be honest it looks perfect the caps are excellent no leaking anywhere, the only thing i can find is a slight whitening on the 2 big black mitsubishi chips, so do you think this rules out the ecu, im not sure how to get the pics on here but i can send pics to anyones email if you want to see.

also checked the wireing from the fcd boost controller and injector wires, the best i can without a electrition anyway, does anyone know where the fuel relay is.

Yes mate the relay is between the air filter and main fuse box but lower down, its tucked in to a rubber boot. For the mod you remove the relay then looking at the face of connector block with 3 connections top and 2 bottom you just bridge a wire from top centre to bottom left and that does away with the relay. That’s how I did it but I advice you to read through the mod yourself. Hope this helps.

what model is it, i.e year and if its an MR. As I have an ECU off an MR that could be used to check, does it missfire when stationary and revved?

I had a similar issue which turned out to be crank pulley timing related. It would tick over fine but as soon as there was any load it was pretty much undriveable.

Did you reconnect the TPS?

its not a mr, its a 1991 gto twin turbo manual, are ecu is code md159964 if your ecu is compatible how much do you want for it

Sorry bud, mines from a later car, should be plenty of mk1’s out there with spare ecu’s, defo try a known working one first before shelling out money on it though.

I’m interested to hear if you fixed this, I’ve just purchased a 1994 gto twin turbo and have exactly the same issue. Under light or quarter throttle it’s fine but anything more I get the kangaroo effect. I’ve not changed plugs yet, just filled with v power fuel to see if that’s make any difference - it didn’t…

Have you checked all your hoses, make sure none are loose, split or letting air in.

I’ve not yet to be honest. It was I the local garage lat week because a part if the intercooler had disconnected. They ran a smoke machine through to check for air leaks, other than the intercooler they reported nothing else.

On a seperate note, my 4WD OIL light had decided to stay on for longer than normal, and today came on while driving… Grrrr… Any special oil
I need to use to too the reservoir?? Cheers!

nothing major to worry about, unless of course you have power steering fluid ■■■■■■■ all out of your car fomr underneath

Just check the level in the power steering resovoir, located to the right of the cambelt when looking at the engine. If its low or near min, top it up see if it solves the problem and puts the light out. If you top it up and the level goes down again you could have a leak, which could be anywhere on the system.

Think its just dexron 3 compatible steering oils or something, I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Cool, thanks. My local (I hate to use this shop) Halfords, do Castrol Transmax Dex III. I’ll give that a whirl.

Cheers
