Well as the title… LoL
Only damning thing is the quote about Gto/3000gt forums in the UK not being as informative or as helpful as mr2 forums!!! Surley not a member here then lol

Then the write up from 2009 for those who missed it:

“I love the effortless way that it picks up speed. From as low as 2,000rpm the first turbo delivers a massive kick in the backside with the second following shortly after…”
Something not quite right with that quote! haha
And I think his comment about the forums not being as informative has SOME merit as there are simply not as many people to help. MR2 forums must have 10 times as many members. However, the people on the GTO forums are 10 times as helpful. In my opinion this is a good thing. It cuts out the BS you get from a lot of people pretending to know what they’re talking about that you get with other forums. You just get good solid advice.
I like the way the ill informed masses think they are slow ,large, barges , super expensive etc .
one of the reasons I bought mine as it was something different and that for me is what makes them special , unless you have had one or driven one for a period of time as they do take a bit of getting used to then you will never believe just how good they are , people just take on board the biased tripe from other car owners , ooh they aren’t as quick as skylines etc , well im pretty sure the kitted out one I played with on the way back from japfest many years ago wouldn’t agree with that statement
Let them believe the crap , we all know better

I think the biggest thing that makes people think they are slow is the long gearing. It feels as though it is taking a while to get to the red line, which it is, but on its way to the red-line it gathers more speed than most cars. Well with a 5-speed anyway.
Well they are three of the above unless you undertake a lot of the work yourself and only use after market parts. I love my car, think it’s brilliant however I have to admit they do have flaws.
The turning circle is poor, I can’t go all the way round a mini roundabout in one. The are large and heavy, though if the new carbon people keep releasing all the parts remade we may begin to see HUGE drops in weight and increases in performance.
By Modern car specs that is true , however go back to late 89 early 90 those specs are pretty damn groundbreaking , go back to the 60’s and the super cars from that era wouldn’t cut the mustard against a lot of modern metal .
For speed I should have clarified that they were quick for cars of the era , a sub 6 second 0-60time when released that can now be bought dirt cheap (albeit needing a lot of tlc) because they were never loved by the masses , the tuning potential was never realised like the supras and for the buyer it has kept prices low good for them bad for the owner enthusiast .The other thing that gets so overlooked is these were never meant to be sports cars , they were leggy Grand Tourers , high speed and high miles on runs they excel at

I wouldn’t say you need to go back as far as the 60’s for it to hassling supercars. Most 80-90’s supercars would be surprised by one of these. And would be completely embarrassed by one with some moderate tuning. It was always Japans party piece in the 90’s. Near supercar performance for a fraction of the cost. And they are still doing it today. You would need to spend upwards of £200k to get close to a Nissan GTR which can be had for less than half of that!
Even some cars built in the early '00’s and considered quick can be surprised by a good standard GTO. E46 M3’s won’t get too far away in a traffic light GP and the driver of the E55 AMG that blitzed past me very late one night on the M5 had a bit of a shock when he ran into his limiter and I cruised gently past…
Once you get comfortable with the handling you learn how far you can push the car - I’ve surprised more than a few supposedly quick B-road cars who all thought a GTO couldn’t do twisty stuff - it can, and in any weather.
For comparison, my current steed is a 2001 Mercedes S-class. It’s designed to insulate you from all outside influences, to remove the sensation of driving as much as is possible. I had to slow down in heavy rain on the motorway because I couldn’t feel what was going on - in the GTO I’d have kept right on at a decent speed because the car communicates that much more.
Hi,
The GTO isn’t such a large car by today’s standards.
Cars have got a lot bigger over the last 20 years and my GTO actually looks quite small when parked in a car park next to today’s bloated cars!
Cheers,
Jez.
I had the pleasure of discovering this over the weekend. I was on a nice b road that I know well and decided to see what she could do. Not as point and squirt as my silvia was but it certainly can’t be called slow. With the ECS turned on she grips and grips. I was pushing on a bit and never got anywhere near her limits!
