Gutted, have i just blown my engine up

hi all, how gutted can one person be, ive got a gto twin turbo which i think ive just blown up, after a race today with a bentley continental gt ( which i stuck with all the way ) backing off at 140mph i saw a big cloud of smoke come out the back of my gto, all the gauges read fine oil pressure and temp ok turbos boosting fine ( 1.2 bar ), but smoking on throttle and deccelaration, got it home pulled the dipstick and its pressurising, smoking on rev up blue smoke, without getting a compression check do you think its the piston rings, or ive heard it could be something called a pcv valve, but have not checked up on that yet, has anyone got any info about this pcv valve or does it look like ive blown it, :frowning:

Check your Y pipe first, if not secured properly it can blow off & you will get exactly the same symptoms as you describe, I did exactly the same, it may look ok but have a really good check

Julian.

PCV is on the front rocker cover on the left hand side as you look at the engine , its a hexagonal piece that screws in (has a vac hose connected to it , remove it and give it a shake you should hear it rattle , if it doesn’t its gummed up give it a spray with carb cleaner and keep shaking it until it frees off .

If it is belching smoke out from the dipstick tube then your crankcase is getting pressurised , could very well be rings

cheers for the replys, will have a beter detailed look tomorrow, if its pressurising like it is does that rule out any turbo problems

by the way any idea what shot of nos the gto was running on that youtube clip, i was thinking about nitrous for my gto at one time, has many people on this site got nitrous on there gto

If you click the link at the bottom my page. That was me running with 150 nos jets

Julian

ps very few have dared try

how long did it last or did you chance your luck a few times  was the nitrous any good on the road or is it mainly for the strip

ps have had a look at the y pipe and took the pcv valve out and its rattling like it should so looks like its piston rings :frowning:

Compression check ideally should be your next line of checks .

See what that comes back with

yep will get a compression check done tomorrow, i also had a quick chat with rob at evil empire today, and rob was saying that the way my cars been set up on 1.2 bar boost is way too much for the standard injectors/pump/turbos/ecu ect, unless the previous owner has fitted uprated turbos, not that im questioning rob as he seems to be the man with gtos but what boost are you guys running on your gtos, mine has hks exhaust decatted, elec blitz boost controller, hks fcd, hks filter, fuel rail jumper kit, bov ect,

Hmmmmm more boost without a way of controlling more fuel doesn’t sound good. Think the fcd just over rides the ecu’s built in protection to stop it from blowing itself up.

As for what boost we’re running, on my stock setup 14psi without proper checks, that led to hg failure.

With checks on my tuned motor so far up to 27psi but we’ll see if there’s anymore left in it.

really depends on what the engine is happy with, shouldn’t be upping the boost without datalogging etc and checking knock.

i notice your from southampton, im only bournemouth, who around the area is good with gtos

Hi mate,
On a standard set up the highest boost you can run safely is 12psi or .8bar and must be logged for knock etc.and what evil rob don’t know about these cars ain’t worth knowing imo.I think you know that you have done the rings unfortunately :frowning:
but hope you can sort it out and welcome to the club.

yep may well have done, well the compression check tomorrow will soon tell me, just keep my fingers crossed it might be a turbo gone

That clip was from 2009 & i ran with nos for about 2 years on and off, car is still running with no adverse effects now without the nos, It can be used on the road but i did use it mainly for the strip, you can take upto 2 seconds off you 1/4 mile time, If done & set up correctly it is no worse than any other power enhancing mod, I also had it on my n/a auto before this car & i still hold the record for the quickest 1/4 mile time for an n/a auto, it was quicker than any standard twin turbo. Good luck with the car.

Julian.

No one, closest specialist is Eurospec in Guildford, although there are a select handful of competent tuners who know general car stuff.

compression on front 3 plugs, 100,130,80 :frowning:

That’s knackered mate , how many times did you crank it /. also try pouring some oil In the bores and try again .

Discrepancy should be within 15psi between the highest and lowest cylinder

Craig

cranked prob around 5-6 times each cylinder, done the test 3 times over to make sure, plus could see oil in the middle bore, i think your right shes had it, time to get to the drawing board and see if its a rebuild or bin it
