Hello all and has anyone got a 6 speed transfer box for sale

Hi! I’m new to the forum but have owned a mk2 twin turbo 3000gt since the end of February. Unfortunately last Friday i discovered that the transfer box is on its way out. Does anyone have a 6 speed transfer box for sale or know of someone who may have one? Thanks.

James.

Welcome to the club.

What has led you to the conclusion that the TC is on its way out? More often than not they either break catastrophically or they don’t.

That must be some kind of a world record

No idea tbh, but I do hope to break less as we move forward.

But guys, this shouldn’t be derailing the OP’s thread.

James fourtwenty, what did give you the thought that your TC was on its way out?

i had the car jacked up and when rocking the back wheel back and forward, there is a loud clunking noise coming from the transfer box. Also when moving in neutral or in gear at low revs there is a noticeable knocking coming from underneath that can be felt coming from area where it is. I had a look on the ramp at my local garage and a bolt had come almost all the way out and the oil had leaked out.

Hi Craig, thanks! I have had a look on Grahams Autoworld but he only has mk1 transfer boxes, and im under the impression they are different?

James

Yes the transfer boxes are different between MkI and MkII also the spool was different on the early MKI t/boxes compared to the later MKI t/boxes

I thought so! Well hopefully he will get a mkII one in stock soon!

James

That doesn’t sound good. Might be worth dropping the TC off and just checking the condition of the output shaft and spool. These can fail.

You could even take the cover plate off the side once removed and check the condition of the bevel gears and how they feel when rotated.

This is a busted one!

One thing, there is a large nut on the shaft behind the rear bevel gear. On one of my TC’s this had come loose and completely unwound!

I take it the UJ on the front of the prop is in good condition?

André

Unfortunately i cant get under the car to inspect any further, and cant risk driving it to the garage, so im a bit stuck as to what to do. Did the tc in the photos fail completely? How can i check the condition of the uj on the front prop? Thanks

James.

Rotate the prop back and forth by hand and see what the play is like. I think this would be an unlikely cause of clunking though.

Do you not have a set of axle stands or can you not borrow some?

Yes that was a sudden and total failure on a launch. They go with a bang and once a couple of teeth break often more will follow in a split second.

André

Hi, can anyone tell me if my transfer box is 18 or 25 spline? I’ve found a part which may be the right one but it is from a 1995 6 speed gto from japan, where as my car is a 1998 3000gt uk model, will there be any issues with this?

Thank. James

yours will be a 25 spline and so long as your GT is 6 speed (which it should be) that will be the right one.

Brilliant! Thanks!

Off topic i know, but the hard oil return pipe that goes to the sump from the rear turbo is leaking oil, and ive been advised to change it when the tc is off becasue it allows easier access. im having difficulty finding the correct part, any advice?

Thanks. James

Thanks again! Your help and fast replies are much appreciated!

James

Yes, the spline is different between the mk1 5 speed and mk2 6 speed
