have purchased a gto but cant collect as yet due to can not insure gto has a private when i phone insurance company up and give the private reg no they are telling me its not recorded on the system i have seen all the paperwork from the owner has any one any ideas

Not sure, but if you have V5 / docs etc. you could contact DVLA and ask what the car was previously registered as before the private plate was put on.
Just an idea, hope it’s of some help dude.

It sounds like you need to speak to an insurer who actually has a clue 
or make sure that DVLA has the registration mark correclty entered against your vechile. Can’t even begin to tell you how incompenent DVLA where after they decided after 7 years my car should be an M reg instead of a N plate and then couldn’t get anyone to tell me. Even though it was a straight forward typo at their end!!! They were about to send me a demand to change the number plate back but I managed to find a sensible girl on the phone and then wouldn’t let her go, only took about three months to sort!!!
Sky Insurance, of course, were fine as always.
