Hi,

I bought a mk1 N/A auto on impulse a few years ago with the goal of getting it back on the road but lack of driveway at my own house meant that for the past 2 years it has been sitting on my mums driveway (she was thrilled)

I ignored all of the red flags when buying thinking that anything can be fixed so now that I have moved house (complete with driveway) I’m slowly going through the car and finding more and more as I go.

I successfully changed the timing belt, tensioner and water pump which felt like a mega achievement but now I’m focussing on a weird rattle that is more prominent now that I have been running the engine for longer.

Im certain the pros about here can help diagose a weird rattle, tons of knowledge on the forum to that could help

Cheers for the warm welcome, the blue is lovely but it’s definitely a ‘don’t look too close paint job’. Yes I will for sure be reaching out about the mystery rattle :+1:

Have you checked the ‘loose nut’ on the steering wheel?

Joking aside, welcome to the club, the foods not the best but the members are.

Ask questions, people love to help and if its the only way we keep these cars on the road, the more the better, and no question is silly.

Thanks Terry, no amount of loctite will fix this loose nut haha.

Much appreciated, these cars have a fair few quirks and it definitely helps with a team effort. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

When you changed the timing belt was the tensioner one of the cheap ones you get on ebay?

I change my one and used one of these… it literally failed the next day and started to make a strange knocking noise that was the belt slapping!.

I changes it for a fixed adjustable tensioner and the problem went away.

Hi M_pro, thanks for reaching out. I had actually noticed the noise before I did the belt, I was just a bit reluctant to run it for long times to diagnose before I changed it for new. I had fortunately managed to get the full kit from evil empire as I had it down as a priority job when I bought the car.

I think I noticed the noise in slower time also when I was manually cranking the engine during the belt change and it felt like metallic ratchet or spring sound that would occur at certain points in the cycle. I have listened to every ‘GTO engine rattle’ noise on YouTube and it doesn’t sound like knock or lifters so I’m a bit stumped and the engine runs seemingly fine.

I will get a video uploaded when I get a chance, is the best place on this site in the ‘technical’ area? I’m still learning the layout.
