How should i revive my GTO after being is storage for 5 years

Hi Guys, i am new to this forum but i have owned a 1992 GTO manual non turbo for about 15 years now, the car has not been driven much hence the low mileage (75km at the moment and it had done 30km when i bough it in 2000) but the last time engine was started was 5 years ago. now i am planning to get it back on the road and enjoy driving it again. i know this much that it won’t be as simple as jump-starting the battery but are there any particular steps that i should take to revive this car? i do not want to cause any damage to engine gearbox etc, the car is pristine and it was in prefect working condition when i left it in a cool and dry garage. it also had four new tires and a new battery. what fluids do i need to change before attempting to start the engine? i know the battery is gone but do tires need to be replaced too considering they look like brand new? cheers

Fist of all I would remove the ignition fuse turn her over and see if you get good oil pressure. Then replace the fluids as needed. Repalce the fuse and fingers crossed.

Good luck and welcome to GTOUK

What I’m doing with a Mk1 gto that hasn’t been started for about the same length of time is to take the plugs out, yes all of 'em, change the oil and filter, then spin it over for as long as you can 'till the oil pressure is up or the oil has got round the engine, and it’s a big engine, then plugs back in connect everything up and fire the old girl up. That is if she will fire up, I’m talking about mine here, I do know that it has a reconditioned ECU from the ECU Doctor in Plymouth, coz I’ve still got to fit it.

Good luck and welcome to the club.

Don’t forget about fuel. If it was left with the tank empty then check the tank for rust. If it was left with a full tank then probably worth draining the old stuff out and giving her some fresh fuel.

As Steve said pull the fuse for the injectors and crank it over once your fluids are changed to get the oil pressure up before firing , it’s a yellow 20 amp fuse in the engine fuse box , check your cambelt too , even though you haven’t used it they have a 5 year life

Tyres you need to check in between the treads and see how much cracking there is , small amounts is fine a lot will fail the mot

thank you for the info, so you think if the oil pressure is fine i can just fire it up with a new battery and drive it a short distance to a garage to have various fluids replaced there? the old oil and old fuel in the tank (there are fuel) won’t damage the engine?

ok i removed the fuse and jumped started the car, engine started roughly with no warning lights on. i let it run for several minutes then attempted to drive it out of the garage, we drove it for about 50m then the ‘check engine’ lights came on and engine shut down. i restarted it (again by using a second battery, the car battery seems to be totally dead) and tried to reverse it back to garage but engine light came back on (as well as a second warning light on dash but i didn’t get to see exactly what light it was) and engine died again. planning to have it towed to a mechanic now, does the check engine light mean anything major?
