Ht leads magnicore or not

Have mk1 n/a pretty much stock
Presently have 8mm magnicore leads but have heard that they are problematic car running rough was wondering if they could be the problem
I know it could be a multitude of things but a friend of mine said he’s experienced running probs on scoobies and removes them everyone a car comes in and replaces them with stock leads most of the time resolving running issues.
Any other leads I can use?
Mine have been in over 2 years now should they be changed anyway?

I think Rob just sells Magnecor leads. I have them on my car and have never had an issue with them. Be careful of anything you hear in the Scooby world. I’m not saying your friend is one of them but everyone in the Scooby world thinks they are an expert and will throw out bad advice quicker than a girl they picked up on beer goggles! Magnecor are probably the best known brand of HT leads and you don’t get a reputation like that through making bad products. And Rob wouldn’t sell them if they didn’t work. Not saying its not your issue and its worth trying, but just take the advice you have been given with a pinch of salt. Having said that if your car is standard then there is no reason why a set of standard leads wouldn’t work.

I need an engine guy who knows these engines inside and out.
Anyone on here ?
Misfire under load!!!

I would do the plugs mate my tt is doing the same they don’t last long

It could be any number of things. Spark plugs, coil packs, PTU, ECU, Injectors, fuel pump, MAF… Bu as Dave said plugs are a good place to start.

The back ire through the air intake and not the exhaust has me puzzled

Would that suggest a problem from 6 5 4 pistons

Same here but not very often go plugs first,I can feel mine missing through exhaust too like a stutter but do have a rather large exit exhaust :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Me too on the exhaust.
Have you got to the bottom of your prob yet?
Mines been like this a while now but doesn’t get any worse. I posted this a while ago does this sound similar to your problem.
i I have a mitsubishi gto 3000 v6 na mk1
ran lovely till one day parked up for 5 minutes engine running went to set off and she started misfiring almost like on 5 cylinders then cleared.
now everytime I come to a stop say at lights or roundabout same thing happens.
I have to feather the throttle till clears.
usually accompanied by a backfire but through the air intake not the exhaust.
its not the mass air flow as have changed it.
no engine code from ecu thats showing no problem.
ive noticed it only happens under load ie pop into drive or any gear while stopped and I get a miss (automatic).
it also doesn’t miss when engine cold.
once upto speed no problems it pulls like a train
starts first time half revolution and fires up
any ideas??

Recently did a 600 mile round trip to Brighton and was okay. It’s more annoying than trouble some.
I have noticed it smells very rich but always has even before problem started.
If it is the plugs possibly why when cold are they okay but when engine at operating temp does problem start?
I’ve seen a post on here regarding fuel relay mod
Could that be a possibility?

Mines a bit more annoying as it’s a turbo and makes it harder to drive have to floor it everywhere😄 not a bad thing lol
Will let you know what happens with plugs and leads will be doing next weekend, I too have no ecu codes( new ecu) no boost leaks f## all wrong generally as rebuilt engine too.

I whipped the throttle body off and cleaned the idle control valve and butterfly housing bit made no difference.
I guess as suggested I’ll be systematic in doing the less expensive jobs first but as I see it looks like could be anything
Plugs ,leads, injectors, vacuum leak, coils,O2 sensor, timing, caps on ecu, tps the list goes on.
Because its not throwing ecu codes it’s difficult to pin point.
No codes must suggest that engine management is okay so it’s more mechanical or receiving wrong readings from air to fuel mixture so compensates adding more fuel than necessary.
Grrrrr

Do you come to Brighton often? I am just up the road in Worthing so could help with a once over and swapping parts out with my car to see if anything helps. Mine is a turbo so not everything will fit but some parts will.

Not often to Brighton but I’ll certainly pm you should I be back down anytime soon.
I’m in northeast (Stockton on tees)
No one around here really that has knowledge of these cars as far as I can see unless anyone from club knows anyone

Check the members location map. Probably someone near by you.

ok so most of the time the magnacor leads are 2nd, 3rd 4th hand and as such have been passed down from member to member, no one seems to throw them away.

MSD are better, apparently but come with a suitable price tag, unless of course you make them up yourself in which case you can do it for about £30.00 to £40.00 otherwise there £120.00 to import ready made.

I’ve done well over 50k on a set still going strong that’s about 6 years!!

Missfires could be a number of things, need to work through each affected component one by one to eliminate what isn’t the problem.

My magnecors were fine on my stock engine , only when I upped the boost did problems manifest with the leads and coils

Chuck a set of plugs in and change the leads for stock it’s cheap enough . @gavin_naish Has hit the nail on the head though with second and third hand parts , I know of a guy who had a problem with his magnecors where the head that goes on the coil pack wasn’t jointed properly to the lead and that gave problems , leads we’re not that old either

Craig

Finally got to take plenum off to check back plugs.
Number 6 pencil connector rubber at end had perished internally on one side the spark plug insulation pointed that something was wrong.
Put everything back together after changing plugs my misfire was still there as now I need to either change out the whole lead or find a rubber to fit end of pencil.
At least I now know the problem

Does anyone have a number 6 lead or just the rubber that connects to spark plug.
Not really wanting to buy full set of leads which it looks like what I’m going to have to do
Got magnicor on at moment which are currently at about £120 a set

Check with Rob at Evil Empire. He might have some spares knocking around.
