Insurance after disqualification

Insuring a slightly modified GTO after a disqualification.

I’m two months from regainining my licence from a 16 month disqualification, reduced to 12 after taking the Rehab course.

Details arent important, but it was a morning after a heavy night. blew a 57 … Felt sober as a nun, must have done it hundreds of times without realising it, the course helped, made me realise that youre so over the limit the next day without knowing it… Most have done it, without realising… I bet 90% reading this reckon that theyre ok to drive before noon after a session of 6 pints. … You’re not… You get bagged, you’re over and banned… W’ve all done it.

Long story short I got 16 months, reduced to 12 after attending a window licker programme.

Inxurance on a 3kgt has gone up from £250 to £1400, enen a 1.4 ltr citroen c2 was £1200, I used to be a proper ■■■■, i would drive home over the limit… Just over, but over… Invincible… For years… Never pissed, but over.

After taking tbe bus, walking… Feeling the shame of thinking everyone knowing youre banned (they dont, but its in your head every day), I count my units… Six stellas takes 18 hours before you blow a zero… This was news to me. The amount of times I drove to work over the limit without knowing blew my mind.

Anyway… I’ve learnt my lesson, paid my debt and am less ignorant.

My question is does anyone have any advice on insurance?

I am less likely than most to be over the limit but the lowest premium is £1400 compared to £300 before my ballsup. Stats show i’m 3.5 times less likely to drive over the limit compared to the average driver.

Any advice guys?

Personally get yourself something old that is worth nowt while you search for the right gt / gto. At least time spent on insurance will start ticking then. If you can find a decent enough fiesta or similar from the 90s insure it for 100 quid in value and put your excess up a bit. It will take a few years before you dont need to declare the ban ( if at all now?) and your gonna get stung on insurance during that time. If you come across the right one and can afford to park it up whilst you get it to your level of mods or concourse condition etc then switch insurance further down the line. Failing that get a mk1 and go on classic third party and let it build from there. I would get insured on something asap though to try to make a start on pushing through the first couple of years pain barrier

Shop around, some companies specialise in people who have been banned for DD. Happened to a friend, he shopped around and got the premium significantly cheaper than before the ban, and yes it was the same car.
search DR10 car insurance.

Hi,

Just to let you know that we have several specialist schemes for drivers with previous convictions. If you would like a quote feel free to drop me a line.

Kind Regards

These guys apparently specialise in this kind of situation, they have affiliation with other clubs that if you can become a member of for cheap or free may be worth it to bring the price down a touch. I don’t think GTOUK are affiliated with them though.

On reflection, my post ws to educate or inform those of us who drive to work following a reasonable previous evening session.

I genuinely thought I was ok to drive the following day… And honestly I was in theory, the law ignores theory.

The last 12 months have devasted my life, income, shame and being left out of society have led to to depression, denial, angerband finally acceptance of what is acceptable however straight one feels. Driving wankered from the pub deserves condemnation and rightous hatred, its wrong, just plain wrong. We dont consider the following day… Unless youre still seeing double… I made a mistake of misjudgement that I will never repeat… I just wish they would include the course I attended as part of the driving test.

Bear in mind guys the unit measurement they use is from the 1970s, one unit equals half pint of 3.5% beer.

Have a coke… And enjoy driving your magnificent machines… Dont be a ■■■■ like me.

Much love

Des.

I’ve been a bad boy in the past lost my licence 2 times (once for drink, once for points) back in the day…learnt my lesson 2nd time,it took growing up not to do it. But morning after does concern me a lot I need my licence for work invested in an expensive breathalyser after reading this just to be safe when I have a morning after that way I can wait till I’m clear.
Good luck with insurance mine was OK after bans but that was 20+ years ago so far clean since, have you tried classic insurance policy Des?

There is a lot of us guilty of this Des .

i know i have been on many occasion , whilst ive never done it from the pub the morning after has always been a concern (yet stupidly it never stopped me ) having the works van i knew damn well that if i was in an RTA whether my fault or not i would get bagged and that would be that .

Ive said to people in the past there is no way you would start drinking at 8am in the morning go at it big time untill 12pm then think in any way would you be fit to drive at 6pm , yet change those figures around to 8pm and midnight and because we have had a nap and its technically a different day we think we are fine to be behind the wheel at 6am .

Ive been very very lucky over the years and also incredibly stupid and selfish as its not just my own well being i have put at risk , when the penny does eventually drop its quite humbling and scary

Take it easy and good luck with your search

I honestly think you’ll do well to get under a grand, I’d expect just above the thousand pound mark. £1,100 - £1,400 roughly, known some others in similar circumstances on much smaller cars and ended up paying £800 - £1,000
