Insurance for 17 year old

I’m after a new shape GTO for about £7k-£8k.

Who would be best to go with for insurance? I don’t really want to pay anymore than £1500. I might have to get my dad to insure and put my on as a second driver.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You have relised these are group 20 cars?

To insure it yourself your looking around £3500+

Actually…come to think of it, i doubt an insurance company would even insure you for it. :?

I know that they are group 20.

I will have to ring round Tesco, CO-OP, Norwich Union etc and get quotes for me as a second driver on my dads insurance.

most companies won’t even look at people below 30. never mind your age… sorry… bearer of bad tidings and all that… before you even start looking get your insurance pinned down…

Trust me if you find anyone who will even quote… it will be extortionate.
2k+++

Sorry, work on getting your own insurance… and build up the ncb, trust me this is something i didn’t do till i was 30 and i always regretted it.

cheers

as above - not gonna happen im afraid! i was 21 when i got my tt and got screwed on the insurance. most places you will have to either be 25 or 30+ to even get a quote. if you get put as a named driver they might ask a lot of questions, as they are trying to stop people doing it.

30 is a little over the mark, I got my GTO at 24 and the insurance was £1100 the first year and this year it’s looking like £950ish

considering that’s the same as my nissan micra cost to insure at 17, I’m kind of used to paying that much for insurance

Tesco insurance - having said that they have changed their policy to only quote over 25’s for group 20 insurance

but: 17 is way too young to consider getting insurance on a GTO - being a named driver on your father’s policy will make no difference either, they’ll either flat refuse to insure you or they’ll charge £3K+

good luck. Most companies laughed down the phone when I was 23. What experience have you got driving a car like the GTO. I am not being funny, but if you are not confident you will end up doing yourself an injury and ■■■■■■■ your dad off for losing his no claims…

On a sellfish note I don’t my insurance to go up when you wrap in round a tree…good luck all the same.

Deano

Be careful you may find that:

A) Your dads no-claims are already being used on his car and you can’t use them twice.
B) If the GTO is in your name and you are only seconds driver it may cause problems.

So what did we learn today children?

The GTO is for pensioners

I got insured on my import TT when I was 20 with Tesco but since then insurance companies have changed their policys.
I have lived abroad for a few years and since I’ve returned I can find only 2 companies that will insure me now that I am 23 with 5 years no claims. (and like Deano, I’ve also had companies laugh down the phone, then hang up on me) even though I’ve owned and been insured on it for 3 years.

I really don’t think you have a chance of getting insured.

Luke

I didn’t say he wouldn’t get insured i said"most companies won’t"

Lifesure for example!

Personally I don’t think a 17 year old should be driving a car like this, the majority of new drivers have an at fault accident within the first 10 months to two years of passing their test, if they manage to get past two years they are probably good drivers (or very lucky).

I owned a bodyshop for many years and it always amazed me how many new drivers wrecked perfectly good new cars because of a lack of experience behind the wheel, and how many pi$$ed off dads I met who had lost their no claims. E.g. dad 57 yo full NCD never had an accident buys son a BMW 320i for passing his test, puts son on his policy. That night son goes out to take his mates for a spin in new motor, showing off wraps it round a tree, all end up in hospital and dad looses his NCD.

My advice get a cheep banger for a couple of years to get your road sense, experience and no claims up, then think about something a bit better.

Just my opinion,

Russ

Couldn’t agree more, but when driving around in dad’s GTO is staring you in the face, this is very much a hurculean task.

Forget it then!!!

Get a MK1 for £4000 and spend the remaining £4000 on insurance, that’s if anyone touches you at 17.

My mum’s the main driver and I’m 21, she’s around 800 years old, full NCB, the works. £2000 was the price with full CAT1, about 8000 miles a year. She drives a Focus, and her insurance trippled when she couldn’t use her NCB, so I pay that difference too. I’m with Admiral - the only ones who would actually quote me.

That said, if you can get one, go for it, coz these cars are truly amazing. I would also like to suggest you buy something with 180bhp or so before you get one of these and run it for a few months at least so you know what it’s like to approach corners at 140mph, or you’ll kill yourself, and your passengers.

Please don’t learn the hard way. You can’t bring someone back. You must respect a car like this.

See if the IAM will take you on, failing that, get a few track days in something like a Ferrari 355 to give you some experience. If you’re looking at GTO’s at 17 I’m guessing you have some money behind you, and whilst no amount of money can bring someone back, it can pay for advanced driving courses!

Sorry to go on so much, but I had a few ‘incidents’ when I first got the car (after 2 days I think) that made me question my ability to own such a powerful machine, and I’m grateful I’m still here. I’ve a lot more respect for her now, and hope I can have the same effect on someone else!

Removed by myself :?

I don’t know where the 17 year old figure came from in this thread (go on, read back through it - dare you!)

Basically, if you live in Grimsby, you have no chance…

OK, seriously - move to Louth…

Alright then, real Homer stuff - You can insure a GTO under 25 for less than £1300. I did it with Tesco. There are others. If you want a Mark 2 (for the money you are quoting, I guess you do, then you would do well to get an online quote from Tesco.com) and see what it comes out at. If it more than you can afford, then you have no chance. If it is below expectations, then game on.

Steve (powerstation operator - Immingham)!

Maybe the name of the thread?

Thats what my fiesta costs if the insurance was on me. :?

Thanks for the help.

I’ll try giving CIS a call, I tried an online quote but it said to call them. I did however try a group 5 punto and it said £350 for fully comp (Thats me as a second driver on my dads insurance) Hopefully it won’t be much more for a GTO  With CIS you don’t have to give name or age of second driver, you just have to say the second driver will be under 25.

I have seen a 1996 GTO twin turbo (Not modified). Does anyone know the top speed and 0-60 time of this car?

Cheers

So far only Russ has had the decency to put his real thoughts into black and white. At 17 you have next to zero road sense and skills and with 300 plus b.h.p. at hand it is a lethal combination. Go away, buy something practical, learn to drive properly on the roads and get some real time experience.
Do i sound harsh and mean ? I don’t really care. You may even have been driving on tracks or other substances since childhood but it does not prepare you for the other idiots who adorn the tarmac surfaces in this country.

Mark.

Please take the advice of GTO MAS and Russ.

Get a few years experience under your belt.

As an apprentice when i was your age the majority of my year had a smash and wrote cars off.

Many were through speed and many like my own were through sheer inexperience.

These cars can be a handfull when you first drive them.

Cut your teeth on something cheap , not meaning to be rude but a Fiat punto is probably around a group five and as already mentioned these cars are a group 20, there is a big diference.
