Rebuild has been quite a challenge!
Car was an eBay special - supposedly rebuilt with a performance engine that “just needed mapping”. Looked great and drove well - no bangs or knocks - but it was pretty sluggish. Remember, it “just needed Mapping”.
Drove it up from London to Aberdeen then booked it into a shop in Edinburgh for mapping (after some terrible previous experience in Aberdeen…another story).
Got it up on the ramp in Edinburgh and all looked decent - except for a drip of oil from the engine. Fast forward a week and they’d completely stripped my engine and gearbox and when I refused to approve a £9k rebuild, I was told to get the car off the premises. All the internals were thrown into the boot and I had to get the car out.
Subsequent inspection showed the “performance engine” was anything but that, turbos were stock, car had previously been in a rear-end shunt, fuel tank rotten, seats didn’t fit, wheels didn’t fit, dodgy, restricted exhaust…etc., etc., etc.
Really had a massive rebuild on my hands - but having sunk a fair bit of money into buying the car, I decided to go ahead…
New 550+ HP engine now in with custom turbos, 3-D compressor wheels, wide body rear wings, chassis straightened, new tank, Mk4 front and rear, vented bonnet, 6-speed box, full respray etc…
Pretty much all put together now, having harvested clips and panels and carpets from my Mk3 as part of the finishing.
Waiting to get seats that’ll fit then I’ll get the car started and mapped.
Don’t think I’d go through this again - but I do love my GTO’s…
Will post some pics in a separate thread…not sure whether my project will be an inspiration or a total turn-off tho’
