Leak.. help please

I was wondering can anybody help me in knowing what this filter shaped thing is what looks like its attatched to the bottom of my coolant reservoir as ive got a bad leak coming from around that area

I noticed that on mine the other day mechanic said some sort of filter lol cheers for the info I said think it’s power steering not sure someone is bound to correct me but most are at birthday bash that would correct me prob very drunk right now so don’t hold your breath :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s the evap canister. It’s full of carbon things and prevents you from blowing up.

Thanks for the replies  any idea why my coolant tank keeps overflowing i havent changed the levels its sat between low and full but when warmed up was forcing itself out of the lid. Perhaps ive got a blockage somewhere?

Sounds more like a thermostat to me, check that out first, like mine when I first got it, it didn’t have a thermostat!!!

you might have air in the cooling system forcing it to overflow through the expansion tank. Have you tried beeding it?

That’s the evap charcoal cannister for fuel vapours, front bottom left of the engine. Doesn’t leak a fluid just soaks up fuel smells.

Thanks guys ill check ive got a themostat in amd bleed it all while im at it to see if both of them work:) is there a haynes manual or similar for the gtos? As being new to ownership of it all ive done at the minute is new airfilter and fitted a front mount intercooler and that was a nightmare haha

There are manuals in the club shop, you can get them on USB now, also look in the technical section, there is usually answers to questions, as everyone has experienced things with these cars and come up with solutions.

Aaron,
Does your temperature guage move to the H, or does it stay midway between the H and C? The reason I ask is that if your engine does not have a thermostat fitted for whatever reason, your engine temp will take longer to reach normal operating temperature, and this will be very noticeable in the first 10 minutes or so after starting. If no thermostat is present then it will be a sign that the previous owner has removed it to try and keep the engine cool, and that there are indeed cooling problems. The expansion bottle is “closed” and has a dip tube which allows coolant to expand into it when the engine has warmed up sufficiently. When the engine gets cooler, that fluid is drawn back into the engine coolant filler neck automatically. As a rule of thumb, check your coolant level when cold by opening the engine coolant filler cap. The coolant level should be up to the filler cap neck at the point where the overflow outlet to the expansion bottle begins. The coolant level in the expansion bottle should be between MIN and MAX, certainly you’ll want sufficient coolant to cover the dip tube in any event.
Your coolant radiator fan should also be switching on when the coolant temp begins to climb higher than normal as well.
Good luck with checking it out,

Mike

Thanks terry and mike for your replies  and my gto has aftermarket gauges and the water temp quickly gets up to and sits around 85-95° after 5-10 mins of driving i dont know if this matches what you were suggesting about being inbetween the factory H-C gauge mike?

Your gauge is recording the correct temperature once the engine has run for a while. 90c is the mark to hit, so it looks ok so far. Are you losing any coolant?

Mike

No not that im aware of the leak has stopped since i topped everything back up after it had overflowed and ive checked all the levels and seems to be fine but i think when i get a weekend off work im still going to check for a thermostat and double check other things
