Looking for Help & Advice – 1993 Mk1 GTO TT

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone in the community might be able to help or point me in the right direction.

I bought a 1993 Mk1 GTO Twin Turbo around two years ago, and unfortunately it’s been one problem after another. Within the first week, the engine timing was set incorrectly, and since then the car has been worked on by two different people and has come back with more issues each time. It’s cost me a lot of money, and to be honest I feel like I’ve been let down and ripped off along the way.

The frustrating part is that, after two years of ownership, I’ve never really had the chance to drive and enjoy the car properly because it’s always been off the road or waiting for another repair.

I genuinely love the car and don’t want to give up on it. I’d really appreciate any advice from experienced GTO owners, or if anyone would be willing to have a chat on the phone and share some knowledge. I’m happy to message my number privately.

Thanks in advance, I’m hoping to finally get this car sorted and become part of the GTO community properly.

Hi Ross,

Sorry to hear you’ve had recurrent issues with your motor, and welcome. Where are you living? The community here are always willing to assist where they can, so getting your whereabouts would be the first step.

My usual mechanic hated looking at my 1991 TT and usually just delayed it which became frustrating, to be fair he’s been brilliant with me over the years with other motors I’ve had, but these cars are pretty obscure I suppose and he runs your typical MoT garage.

I’ve now found a garage that were more than happy to work on the car and were confident in doing so. I’ll be taking the car back to them from now on and my daily driver to my usual MoT guy.

Hi mate. I live Leicester. Like you know, no one wants to touch it now unfortunately and 14k in total and car is worse than I bought it l. Where about is the garage you use, I’m wiling to travel for the right skills

I’m in Swansea and the garage I used is about half an hour drive from me. Bit of a trek for you though! I’m sure others will be along that are a lot closer. But for reference i used JNB Autos.

Cheers,

Dave

May I also suggest WESTFIELD motors, who are based in Essex. I realise that’s a matter of logistics, but these people, going on various feedback from other members, know the GTO very well.

I am also happy to have a chat with you on the phone, if you were happy. to do that.

Mike

What are the current problems with the car? Can you elaborate on what issues the car seemed to come back with from where it has been? What bills have you had for what work apparently done?

Hi Ross

These cars can be awkward for garages to work on them, especially if they haven’t done so before.Im just up the road in Lincoln and can recommend a garage local to me called Newton and Bailey, they are Japanese specialists and have worked on a few gto including cambelt and clutch upgrades to mine.Would recommend them in a heartbeat for they’re quality of work, communication and respect of an old car
