New Owner Alert

Hi all,

Just picked up my 3000gt VR-4 yesterday and I’m over the moon with it so far - I’ll post a couple photos below - let me know if you recognise it. Be nice if I’ve bought a stinker but seemed good to me!

It’s been sat in storage for about 10 years and only come out for MOTs and a few drives here and there. I’m looking to cover everything before I start to enjoy it properly and first thing on my list is to do the cambelt and water pump as it was last done 10 years ago (only done 8000 miles since)

Can I get some recommendations on trustworthy garages that will do this for me with no issues. I don’t want just anyone working on my pride and joy! I’m based in Hampshire but am willing to travel within reason!

Second thing, I’m of course still learning about how’s these cars work. One issue I do have is that the car struggles to sustain RPMs and when I clutch in and come to a stop at a junction more often than not the car cuts out. I’ve learned that this is most likely the idle air control valve playing up but can some experienced folk weigh in before I start buying parts unnecessarily

Other than that love the car

all the best

Welcome to GTOUK,

Welcome, and gorgeous car!

If it’s the IAC (which it sounds like it could be) I’d replace it ASAP, it grounds through the ECU and can kill it! Not to terrify you, but I’d rather say than not.

Follow this guide here on how to remove it, test it, and clean it. The coils/pins can test fine and the motor still be jammed, but if the coils/pins don’t test correctly then 100% replace the unit. If the images don’t load on the site, replace the HTTPS:// portion of the link with HTTP:// (it’s a common issue on Stealth316.com).

You can get them from Amayama, Viamoto, and eBay - but I’d try to get an OEM one and not aftermarket.

The other two options I’d wager it being is a vacuum leak (buy a vacuum tester, they’re VERY helpful with these cars) or the Fast Idle Air Valve on the bottom of the throttle body.

Similarly for the 60k service, you can 100% do it yourself with a Halfords toolkit, torque wrench, timing tensioner tool, YouTube, and the service manual. It’s a “scary” job but if you’re even slightly mechanically inclined and have the tools you’ll be able to do it! Everyone has to do it for the first time after all
