As of today im the proud owner of a GTO TT! Got it as a second car to tinker with a little so definetly see me floating around the ‘how on earth do i…’ area’s.
A little about the car as far as I can tell so far…
It’s a Jap car, 100k KM and came from an owner who loving cared for it for 19 years, might even be on the forum somewhere?!
Got a couple a known issues to work through the most pressing being steering wobble at 65mph and also under breaking. My assumption is likely it needs lower front bushes and ball joints.. Probably a wheel balance and alignment to.
Congratulations! Beautiful example of a GTO No one did red like Japanese car brands did. I’m also recently a new owner - E9 GTO. Have any plans for the car?
I wasn’t sold on the red until I saw it in person and now I’m a fan and really like it.
Plans wise, right now just get some of the worn areas all back up to scratch to start off
Suspension
brakes
Temp display isn’t working
There’s some wild wiring in the drivers footwear I want to tidy up.
Later on
Push it to 400bhp ish
Maybe go deep metallic purple via a wrap with some bronze wheels
I’d like it to sit lower but the exhaust on it right now will not allow it. Due to the exhaust its ground clearance is already less than my Type R!
The ECS is stuck in sport so I’m tempted to throw some coilovers on it and done with it. Active aero is also funky so I think the board needs it’d capacitors doing, that’s a guess though.
Intend to do all this with the kids so will be a fun journey.
Get the wheels balanced for the wheel wobble at speed, for braking yes check suspension bushings but also check the condition of the front brakes and measure for disc run-out with a dial bore gauge - ideally you want 0.001”, but anything over 0.003” will cause juddering. Even with new discs you should check wheel hub run-out before fitting and see if rotating the disc position on the hub helps.
ECS stuck in sport mode could be a faulty shock absorber, BUT, it could be that BOTH the TOUR and SPORT lights should be on but the TOUR bulb is out. The ECS ECU in the boot of the car (driver side rear) could be a possible culprit if it looks corroded.
The TEMP display, if it’s the early one with the big buttons and the fancy screen are mostly repairable if it doesn’t light up but still makes beeps (search online) or find a working replacement - but I seem to recall hearing that it is necessary to match part numbers of what you have and/or having to match the controller box behind it too if you plan to change display units.
I wish my dad was as cool as this! The only time he’s showed any kind of interest about my GTO is when I pulled onto our drive for the first time and he said “that’s a bit loud isn’t it?”
Pretty much the same list as mine… get it up to scratch to pass its first MOT with me, get some bronze wheels and lower it as much as UK roads can reasonably allow. I’d love to fit a quick release but I have no idea how people get past MOTs with those
