Hi new to the gto scene just picked up a bargain import twin turbo it needs some work but that’s the part I love. Anyway the car its self only has 54k on the clock genuine mileage I have the import and service history it’s got a 6 speed manual box but I do have a few issues hope someone can help me out with some advice.
1.reverse is non existent I can get it now and again but as soon as I let go of the shifter it will jump out then trying to get it back in it will just grinde. I have checked the linkage and counter weight etc also checked the reverse lock out all working as it should so stumped on that one only option I’m thinking is pull the box and open it up.
2, the Speedo works fine till I get up to 60mph then it sort of slows down sticks but still goes up but it’s 10mph out car says I’m going 70mph but I’m really doing 80mph.
Was driving it back from the sellers on the motorway put my foot down and it seemed to stutter or miss fire for a split second then it takes off bit like a auto when you put ur foot down it holds or a second then changes best way I can explain it .
Sort of like jz I got 99 problems but buying a gto ain’t one.
Hope some of the members can help me out with these.
Reverse issues is not uncommon , tends to be as you say a box pull job
As for hesitating , is the car standard ? Could be a number of things from plugs through to fueling .
A lot of these things and more have been covered in the technical sections over the years , well worth a look if you decide to rake out full membership
Welcome along mate…I had an auto and it used to bang into reverse…the auto boxes are often neglected people think they can just run and run them…manual ones suffer too from neglect and sycro problems.
Good luck as Craig says above prob a box put job.

Cheers for the reply I thought it might be a full strip down job take a look see what’s going on but rather shocked that a box with so little miles on it would be at fault. May be easier to replace the box with a second hand unit as iv been looking about and gearbox internals seem to be hard to come by.
Thanks for the replys guys sorry forgot to say the car is completely stock apart from a dodgy start button and what looks like a fake hks bv. Also I have a funny feeling that the flywheel is aftermarket there is paperwork for flywheel and clutch work but not very detailed. Shes abit of a shed at the moment but il have her up running and back to her former glory in no time lol
Welcome to the club, getting 2nd hand 6 speedboxes is not that easy at all, and can go for big prices usually, so if you can locate a good one at the right price grab it, maybe better to get yours fixed, then you know the bits are new
Looks like you have yourself a mk3 car there so pretty rare, well worth sorting.
Good luck with the car.
Thanks for the reply yeah seems most parts for this car are pretty hard to get hold of parts price list is growing by the day. I was very surprised after the 300 mile drive to collect the car as the advert for it was completely off. was listed as a uk 3000gt in top condition no problems other than no reverse the car was trashed dings all over it wheels were smashed to hell turns out buckled start button broken do had to touch two wires together to start it and the big one a puddle of oil under it. Anyway after alot of uming and areing the seller then asked to make a offer so I did and ended up getting it for alot less than originally agreed well let’s say the 300 mile trip home in it was very interesting but non the less she made it back with no major problems apart from me forgetting that reverse didn’t work and looking rather daft with one foot out the door pushing it back to get out a parking space lol. Then to get home and discover it’s a mk3 import sort of made it worth the very long day one very happy owner.
I had tonnes of people contact about this car when it was on ebay
Great price you got it for !!
However when sorted you will have one of possibly only 300ish MK3 GTO’s ever made,so rarer than some Ferrari’s
Your gearbox problem will involve stripping down the gearbox and having inspected by a company that know what they are doing, not a company that fix everything as these guy will F**k up the gearbox faster than you can say " How Much ?"
I most probably have all the required bit in stock to fix the Reverse gear issue as i have quite a lot of gearbox stuff in stock and i can help you locate some one who knows what they are doing with these gearboxes as i have several around the country that do
Give me a call on 01702-614469 and i will help you further
Thanks for reply rob I was hoping it would be something simple and easy didn’t think a box with so little miles on it would go wrong but hey live and learn. I will be having the gearbox out over the weekend and will be rebuilding it myself as I like to have all work done in-house I’m not shy around gearbox rebuilds have done a fair few on Jap imports. And yes my massive parts list is all down to your site you seem to be the only supplier within the UK every time I go on to have a look for bits the budget goes out the window and it goes ooo have one of those of and one of them haha so won’t be long till my massive order comes in.
Call me before you take it apart as dismantling the gearbox incorrectly will result in damage you will not be able to repair and will result in looking for another gear box.
Back in the good old days i overhauled 100’s of 5 and 6 speed gearboxes for this car (don’t do it now, do not have enough time too) and you need some special tools to repair them properly and not break things
You could check the adjustment of the cables too if you didnt do that allready. However i do have same issue sometimes, then i just put it 3rd first and then back in reverse. Mine daily volvo does the same sometimes when it was parked. Unless your car do this all the time, i would not bother.
