Hi guys just joined up. I have acquired a M reg gto tt 6 speed facelift for very cheap money. Gone against all advice on buying these cars as in not viewing and buying one needing some work. Quietly bricking myself as to what i have done. The car has an electronic fault. The power TR unit has failed part number J723T, it controls cylinders 12&3 and the taco. The chap has fixed this before which is my concern as i worry why it would happen again.
Any help welcome as i know very little about the gto i am a long time supra owner and still have my MK3 supra currently undergoing a hart transplant.
Fitting a 1jzgte with manual gearbox to replace my 7m auto.
The gto will be with me on moday, i wanted to to be a paid member so i could ask away in the tech section but dont have 5 weeks to wait. I want to get on and find the parts i need and get on the road. I dont have a cheque book so paying is a pain as paypal is not welcome.
Anyway couple of pics of both motors

Hi fella welcome to GTOUK 8)
The PTU failing or coil pack could be due to a second hand one being installed
As for membership you have a PM

Your Supra looks stunning.
Yes stunning Supra, Welcome to GTOUK
Julian
Thanks guys been doing the supra for over 8 years hg blew for the 5 time on the way home from jae hence a change in direction . Just spent 2k on a new engine and loads of other parts but that’s only about half what the swap will cost. The gto cost £530 which is real cheap for a tt manual. Hope I can fix her up. Looking forward a different challenge. What is the ptu.?
Hi welcome aboard. PTU power transistor unit. If you look at the engine left hand side just below the coil pack, it’s a black plastic thing with connectors on.
Get some more pictures up when you can fella.
Welcome to the club and good to have another GTO in the south west…Supra looks mint looking forward to seeing some photo’s of your new toy.
How can you tell if the ptu or the coil pack is at fault?
Welcome to the club. If your Supra is anything to go by, I’m sure you will do a good job with the GTO.
André
Hi And welcome to the club
The PTU looks like this and lives under the coil pack
If you going to keep the GTO do your self a favour and repalce it with new part and not replace a 20 year dead part with another 20 year part !!!..lol
If i can help you do please call me
Very nice Supra

[/quote]Thanks for the pic do you think i should replace this part as well as the power tr unit? The seller said he did it twice already. Not sure on time period of failure though. How much are the parts?
the picture is the power tr unit that you are referring to.
Problem is with ignition faults it can be any one of the parts in the chain, what are the exact symptoms, if any, as it just says in your post that it has been replaced before and problem is on cylinders 1,2 & 3.
There is a wealth of knowledge in the techy sections and we have all posted about the same problems, symptons and solutions based on our own experiences. Best of all is when you fix it yourself after reading up on the forums though.
Can’t access the tech section yet as I only joined yesterday. Don’t have the car yet it arrives Monday. The seller said it’s running on 3/4 cylinders? That’s about all i know really. He has replaced this part twice. Going to pay the join fee tonite when I get in. Just wanted to get a head start on what I might need to buy to get on the road.
Gavin is right
Wait till you get the car and do some diagnostic stuff after reading the forum
Most of the time they fail in succession is because they were already on their way out in the first place !!
Replacing the Ignition Coils and PTU/Ignition Amp is always good as the car will liven up firstly and also do more MPG afterwards, I have sold loads of these and always get the same feed back that the car is so much better when they are replaced with Genuine Mitsubishi Ones.
Cheers Rob
Welcome and hello
Does the car have a diagnostic block so I can get any stored codes ? The supra has one that can be shorted out and blinks a code on the dash board.
Hi welcome to the club,
Yes they do have a diagnostics block. Drivers side foot well.
Welcome to the club----stunning Supra you have----lovely part of the world you live in----and hope you get your problem sorted on what was a very very good bargain looking at the pic.

You can use a data logger or an anologue meter which will give a series of pulses for the fault code
