Newbie about to go look at his first GTO

Just called them, apparently from October this year they’ve been unable to offer insurance on GTOs or 3000GTs. Damn and blast haha

Try sky insurance , though my last GTO. Was insured through a plan cheapest I could get with the mods on it ,

Age is going to sting you though

Sky won’t quote me :frowning: - but I did just call Adrian Flux again, and this time they’ve given me a quote - apparently I’ve been misquoted twice in a row, and the actual price as a second car, up to 5k a year mileage policy is…£2143 for the year.

I mean that’s an absolute bomb to you lot, but for a 19 year old on a Japanese import - I can’t complain to be honest. I’ll be insured on it from the 18th

Luke,

Try RH Specialist Insurance, there are a few of us on here who have had good Classic Car quote with them.

Luke,

My GTO is currently insured through Performance Direct - which was my cheapest quote this time around. I’m quite a bit older than you - and I know you’re likely to be hammered on these types of car - but they may be worth a try.

Don’t forget to use sites like Quidco or Topcashback to obtain your quotes - as you can get some money back for insurance, that you are probably going to buy anyway. I’ve found that I get between £40 and £50 quid back on insurance I’ve bought this way. It might be small fry in comparison to what you ultimately fork out…but it’s better in your pocket rather than theirs!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

John.

So, apologies for the quality of the photo but…she’s home!!! 20-odd mile drive home didn’t really wield any nasty surprises - box still kicks down as it should, steering and suspension are good, but the front vent cover came off in my hand when I felt around to check why there wasn’t much demisting action going on up front.

Needs some paintwork but that I knew, at the end of the day for what I paid I’ve basically got a good pot of money to put into it until I hit the kind of values of which are being asked for similar cars with triple the mileage by eBay dreamers. I’ve got full documentation of when the miles to km switch was done too which is a plus!

Not that far away from my old reg number. Possibly another dc car imports one

While Im late here, I’m on classic line insurance. They insure absolutely everything with wheels on it. I pay 376 but they also include a no claims bonus even though it’s still classic insurance. They don’t charge much more for loads of mods either maybe 30-40 quid difference between an n/a and twin turbo. I’m 36 though so I dunno what they’d be like for younger drivers.
If anyone thinks that’s steep still I’m happy to find cheaper myself!

Hi and welcomes

Lovely looking set of wheels youve got , what are they ?

I think your age will go against you , what ever car you choose

Maybe insure it as a second car , with very limited mileage , i use NEED2INSURE , very helpful guys

So the car has gone to it’s storage location, where it’s gonna have a mechanic pop it onto a lift and have a proper good look at everything. In the mean time I’m pricing up the costs of doing the little bits that need doing (n/s headlight shroud, new dash vents, paintwork bits and bobs etc.) and still optimistic.

End of the day it drives fine. Kicks down as it should, yeah the lights are abysmal but this I knew would be the case - there’s some brake bind but shouldn’t be too hard to fix. Want to get it on some proper wheels as soon as I get the go ahead from the mechanic to start piling money into it, as I’m not a big fan of the current wheels (they’re from a Mazda 3 MPS I think, @blower220).

Hella headlamps , best upgrade for the MKI in terms of visibility

I can vouch for that, living in the sticks and unlit road, better to use the missus’ lighter. Hella’s the way to go.

So after an uncertain couple of weeks, with much joy I made a call to Adrian Flux today, confirming that I’d like to be insured on the GTO from December 18th, when the insurance on my current car expires. The first thing will be to get the underside and engine fully checked out, then there’s a massive list of stuff I need to start getting on with. Paintwork first to avoid it getting any worse, and then HID kit, old steering wheel back on etc.

There are a few issues for sure. Headlight shroud missing, one of the speakers sounds like it’s blown as well - also the rear brake is binding slightly, the front demister vent doesn’t appear to supply any air at all on the driver’s side, the rear demister is very slow (although I hear this is actually more a trait than an issue) - also need to see about making it MOT worthy as quickly as possible, luckily being young and with christmas around the corner, I usually end up financially better off rather than taking a hit, which is promising car-wise.

I really want to have it in good condition and be happy with driving it long distance by March. Could be a stretch, but I want it done by then so I can focus on at least having some mods done by Modified Nationals this year.

As you can see in the picture above the wheels sit horribly, and I’m not actually a massive fan anyway, so will be looking to shift these ASAP - to ask again though, as the question slipped the net earlier - which offsets are considered ideal? Are my ET45 18x8J Suzukas going to pose a massive fitting issue? Reason I ask is that I have looked online, and it seems fact is hard to come by, and opinion is rife.

Thanks in advance

I’m new at this, but have done a lot of reading and I think with that offset they should fit, though most people go 8.5 for width. Hopefully someone will correct me if that was wrong.

Shock horror - I have photos in the DAYTIME of the car!

And also I’ve got a big list of everything I’ve found so far that needs attention, as follows

Both steering rack gaiters, nearside front anti roll bar link, fuel pipes (been badly bodged), transmission control module (stuck in Third when in D/L/2 but is deffo an electronics issue), rear centre propshaft mounting bushes, new/fix spiral cord, investigate the absolute mess of wiring in the driver footwell, sort out the paintwork on the bonnet, bumper, boot, spoiler and roof, new cambelt and tensioners, new Aux belts, transmission oil filter, flush and change, oil and filter, rebuild rear calipers, remove stickers, replace a few interior switches and bits that are dogged, nearside front headlight shroud, stock airbox re-install (as this horrid £30 intake that’s been put on it just hisses and sounds awful), restore the awful engine bay (someone tried to paint it with the world’s thinnest paint and a garden broom), couple interior holes need mending.

The overall consensus from the mechanic’s investigation was still good though - no underside corrosion or anything bad other than the gaiters and some bushes, and the car runs nicely despite the gearbox issue, although by the sounds of it and from looking at other forums, this isn’t the end of the world. Even if the 'box is dead, it’s not too expensive for a used gearbox in good working order.

Merry christmas to all of yous by the way, and a happy new year : )
