Newbie with GTO

So it looks ok ish, SRS light is on, passenger door window does not work, needs a rear tyre and the paint work is mostly pink and the black on the bonnet is flacking off.

Also when starting from hot you have to feather the throttle when you put it in drive or it stalls, once you have pulled of it is fine with no stalling and is fine when the engine is cold.

on the plus side it is very solid, has 3 good tyres, MOT till April, working air con, working cruse and it was very cheep.

So the first of many questions what is the button on the side of the gear selector for.

Passenger side window , is the window lock button pressed on the drivers side ? might be that simple , also known that the multiplugs on the door might need a jiggle , before getting into more complicated stuff

Button at the side of the gearknob is it hold or power ? holds the car in gear longer I think ,im sure one of the Auto guys will conform that though

Where is your idle set at when cold ? and where is it trying to idle when hot , not uncommon for the Idle stepper motors on these to play up , can sometimes be a quick spray with carb cleaner or a replacement

Thanks for the info Craig, will check the window lock and multi plug tomorrow.

Idle when cold is about 1100rpm, when hot its about 500rpm, will get some carb cleaner on the steppers and see if it helps

The button on the side of the gear selector is the overdrive button.

It basically controls weather the car will step up to the 4th gear. If its on, then all the gears are selectible, if it’s off (should have a light on the dash that says O/D Off) then it will stay in 3rd.

How long does it stay on 1100 rpm for on cold start , your Hot idle is too low to start with ideally you should be looking minimum 750rpm (that’s were mine used to be comfortable , ended up setting at 950rpm due to tuning though ).

Does it start up at 1100 then drop back to 500rpm after a few minutes ? You might just need to turn the idle up a tad

1100rpm start up then drop to 500rpm after 10min ticking over, how do you turn the tick over up

On the throttle body in the picture below at the top towards the front you can see a black plastic cap (yours may be missing most are ) there is a screw under that , just by the pipe with the hose on it

Get the car warm and adj the screw and keep checking your rev counter until you get it set right

Unfortunately the R71 red cars turn pink VERY quickly. My red one is exactly the same but boy does it polish up nice!! :wink:
