Non runner

Hi, I’m helping a friend with GTO which has been parked up for 4 or 5 years. I charged the battery and turned the engine over but it wont fire. There is no sound from the tank . I believe the fuel pump is housed inside?. A multi meter reads about 5v when the engine is being turned. Does this sound correct. Should the voltsge be higher, and should I be able ot hear the fuel pump?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Your problem essentially could be anything, however that V does sound low. Fuel pump is inside, be careful taking it apart as the hat will undoubtably fall to bits

Thanks Butler. I’ll start with that

Way to low, you can run 12v direct to the pump to see if it works from the connector on top on the housing at least you’ll know if the pump actually works. I imagine it’s all crapped up so you may not want to run that through the filter so you should really drain the tank, put fresh fuel in an go from there. Maybe evacuate the fuel before the filter to see what colour it’s coming out. It could be rusted to bits in which case the tank will need replacing.

Sounds like good advice Gavin. Thank you

I’d replace the fuel filter too, you never know how much cr*p is in there. Slacken the fuel feed pipe to the injectors and turn it over, just lets you know if you have fuel there. I’d also take the front plugs out, change the oil and filter, then spin it over just to get decent oil to the top of the engine. Taking the plugs out gives less resistance to the effort the s/m has turning the engine over.

Thanks Terry.

I’ll try that next. I ran 12v directly to the pump. This produced a buzzing from a relay on the passenger side just forward of the gear lever. I’m not sure what the purpose of this relay is, but I am sure that it shouldn’t be buzzing.

Relay is Imasen E8T08472

Any ideas about this?
