One thing after a bloody nother!

Hey guys, at my wits end here!

Out driving (posing) in my 91 twin Turbo GTO and it lost power and then died altogether, could start the car but the revs would go crazy and have a hissy fit before packing in. Was towed to a garage who have done a lot of work on the GTO and looked after me. Howeverrrrr, said garage specialize in Peugeot and Renault so his knowledge is pretty limited on Mitsubishi. He’s taken a good look at the car, not a problem with any pipes (as originally we thought not enough fuel was getting to the engine) or the air filter meter. Recons it’s a problem with the ignition timing belt.

Now I’m not a mechanic and don’t know much about engines so whatever else was said pretty much went over my head! Apart from the part where he said it needed a Mitsubishi garage or someone who knows these type of cars.

But here’s the best part…

No fecker wants to touch it!!

You mention GTO and everyone seems to go running to the hills.

So I’m hoping one of you lovely GTO nutters will know someone who can help? I’m at Doncaster and am pretty limited to how far I can travel as it has to be towed.

If you’re still awake and with me - well done! :joy:

I really don’t want to part with my beast but am I looking at something that’s going to cost more than what she’s worth?

Don’t give up on her… Sounds like your asking the wrong people. There’s a couple of garages by me that don’t specialise in any particular manufacturer and are pretty clued up on most things. Proper mechanics…! You just need to find one by you.

Sorry that’s not much help but there will be someone to help near you and hopefully someone on here can recommend a place near you.

She looks too good to throw the towel in. A nice clean mk1

Good luck with it

Sounds silly, have you checked your air intake? I had a similar issue and it was just a hose slightly popped off but meant the turbos weren’t feeding the engine. It would seem these cars aren’t keen on running san-turbo.

As @Steven_Smith has said it does sound like a hose has popped off with the way it suddenly died .

These cars in standard trim will not run with an intercooler/turbo hose off , common culprit is the y pipe by the throttle body , but it has been known for them to come adrift at the bottom of the intercoolers .

Before having it towed anywhere check all the hoses , if everything looks ok then im pretty sure Eurospec could get it recovered to their place in guilford

If and its a big if the timing belt has slipped whilst running unfortunately it wont be pretty inside the engine

Thanks for all the advice guys. Had a mechanic come out and diagnose it, turns out it’s a coil pack! So ordered a complete set off evil empire and my original garage will fit it. Am I jumping the gun a bit thinking that the problems solved pretty easily? Seems a bit too good to be true!

Yes that could just be the problem. Fingers crossed :slightly_smiling:

can quite often be the most simplest of things all to often mechanics can scare people into believing that there is more wrong than there is, sometimes through lack of knowledge sometimes to bump up the price of the repair. glad your on the way to fixing it thou lovely looking car
