Over fuelling gto twin turbo

My gto will not idle when I rev it I am getting black smoke and smell when I try to get it to idle I am getting full turbo boost when I rev it goes down there is a new fuel pump and filter fitted can any one give me any advice Thanks .Milo

Often your ecu caps can fail. That’s is what I would look at first.

Neil

As Neil says, the problem could be your ECU. Do you know if the ECU has ever been checked over? Early GTOs had inferior ECUs fitted which leaked their capacitor contents out over the PCB. Idling/fuelling and other symtoms manifested as a result. ECUs can be tested and repaired by the “ECU Doctor”, based near Plymouth.
One other possibility (for idling problems) is the Idle Stepper Motor, situated to the side of the throttle body. The regulator - or pintle - can get sooted up and affect its metering of air and fuel for idling. New ones are circa ÂŁ120, but check with Rob (Evil Empire) about that. Sooted ones can respond to a clean up.
Good luck with it,

Mike

Some one mention my name ???.. :mask:

Have you fitted a Twin Turbo Fuel pump to a NON Turbo car as they are very different in fuel flow

Hi thank you for your advice the ECU has already be done by the doctor the problem I am have is when I start it I have full turbo boost the turbo boost went down and the car idle perfect but when I went to rev it cut out try to start it but it has full turbo boost and will not idle why am I getting full turbo boost without the engine reving can the lamba sensor be damaged or the cat blocked

Is your gauge showing full boost ? you very well might have a big vac leak on the car , have you done any work on it ? does it throw the check engine light at all ?Check all your hoses for tightness , vac leaks will make it run rich and lumpy

Hi I have fitted a denso pump DFP 0101 I don’t think the problem was the pump because I get full turbo boost when I start it and the ECU is over fuelling when the boost drops the car idles but will not rev out and cut out

Hi my turbo gauge show full when I start it it is running very lumpy and over fuelling I have not done any work to it but when the turbo gauge went down the car idle normal but cut out when I revved it I will check tomorrow for any split hoses can the lamba sensor do this or the cat blocked plus the car smells funny can it be because the lots of fuel going through it thank you for your advice

If you are looking at the standard gauge on the dash then with only ign on and engine not running , gauge should be halfway , it has been known if its showing full that the caps in the ecu have gone , yours has been checked I notice , with the engine running on tickover boost gauge should be negative ie below halfway

(technically its not a proper boost gauge either )

Has the engine check light come on at all , or does it come on with ign only ? how long have you had the car and when did this manifest ? was there anything else happening before this point

Sorry for the 20 questions but the more info we can have , the easier it is to give a diagnosis

Hi the boost gauge would never go up only when you are driving I do not drive my car hard and never take it over 2000 rpm I am very care full with it I have had the car for 5years and have done every thing to the engine and gear box when I start it I am getting full boost pressure this has never happened be for I started it and the boost level was normal as it was before and it idle normal for 5min but I went to rev it it cut out and when I went to start it it was showiñg full boost . I have had the heads rebuilt new timing belt new clutch with all the other bits as we’ll all injectors of cleaned and put back new fuel tank new fuel filter fuel pump I do 10 miles a week in it . It has been serviced with new platinum plugs think it’s just getting old thank you for your help and advice

No engine check light comes on

If the ‘boost’ gauge (someone correctly pointed out that it’s not a real boost gauge) is reading max even when the car is just stationary then it suggests that the MAF sensor is giving a false reading, this would also explain why the fueling is wrong and it won’t idle. Try disconnecting the MAF. You’ll get an engine fault light but it should idle OK. If not, check for air leaks after the MAF as someone else already suggested. Mark.

Hi thank you for your advice I have found the problem with it. It was the turbo pipe that runs under the rad hose had come off I was getting a full turbo boost reading and ECU was trying to fuel that need was a one min job to pop back on shame the RAC man did not see it or know any thing about turbo cars thank you for your help.Milo

Hi you are very good one of the turbo hose had come off .Thank you for helping me fix my gto.Milo
