(Relatively) new owner, 1990 GTO

Hi all, I’m based down in Kent and bought this GTO back in 2024 as a project. It’s a manual non-turbo which came with a mix of 61k miles/km. It sat for 10 years so needed some welding and a thorough recommissioning. I’ve since driven it near 14k miles and have loved every bit of it.

It’s been a bit of a rolling restoration due to the age of many components but the essentials are unmodified and working well. It has only forced me to change course once when the crank pulley delaminated and flew off so I had no alternator charge. It hasn’t left me stranded or broken down so far!

It’s had 3 oil changes already and all service items replaced, I’m working through the car as other things start to go wrong. A couple of weeks ago I fit a new fuel tank which I prepared and treated, along with a better condition fuel sender unit and new sender hose.

Hi @elliott124

Welcome to GTOUK :+1: it’s great to see people restoring these cars and enjoying driving them.

As you navigate through the forum you will see we are an active club, attending shows throughout the year and also some of our own functions e.g our Christmas party :joy: hope to meet you at some of the future events.

Welcome to GTOUK Elliot, there’s no better place for information to look after these beautiful cars.

The Search will give you 15-20 years of experience with various problems, problem solving, but ask away, always someone here to help.

Hi both, I’ll certainly be active and will be after various parts for the car. It was in a state where in past years it probably would’ve been broken for parts but I love the red mk1’s so I jumped on it the second I saw the listing. The floor pan had some rot around the drain holes (which has been cut out) but it had been undersealed before storage so faired quite well.

I’ve got the pdf manuals and a physical printed copy of the volume 1 workshop manual, they’ve been a real help. I’ve done a bunch of bits so far like the crank pulley, wet vac’d the carpets and seats, new AC compressor, restored the fuel tank and piping, stripped and cleaned the boot, greased all the weather seals and so on.

It’s my dream car though I would like to have all the turbo gadgets eventually… The fact they were such a technological tour de force makes them very cool and the styling is timeless.
