RWYB-RAF Brize Norton-15th July 2007

It back on again this year

Sunday 15th July

For once it doesn’t clash with another event!!!

RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire (5 minutes off the A40)

Timed 1/4 miles drag race on the nice new resurfaced taxiway, then on to the top of the runway for a top speed dash down the 2 miles of newly resurfaced runway.

No limited numbers this year so all are welcome to come along and prove who has the quickest car.

If anyone want to get many, many 1/4’s in, this is the venue to do it at!!

*******Update

RAF Brize Norton 1/4 Mile Speed Trial

The 2007 event will take place on Sunday 15th July and will consist of a timed 1/4 mile sprint (timing gear run by ‘straight liners.com’) on a taxi way followed by max speed runs on the runway (hopefully straight liners will be able to give us a top speed too ?)

Booking in and scrutineering will take place between 08:30 and 12:00 on the day. The event is due to run from aprox 08:30 to 17:00 depending on weather and flying.

Advance Prices
Bike/Car single run- £10
Bike/car Unlimited runs- £30*

On The Day Prices
Bike/Car single run- £10
Bike/Car Unlimited Runs- £40*

All money goes to charity

*Unlimited runs will depend on aircraft movements and weather conditions.

Remember this is a real operational airfield so we may have to stop to allow aircraft to take off and land on the runway, to add to that, your car must be fit to go on the runway, any body work or loose fittings that look like they will come off and you will not be allowed to take part. We dont want any car parts strewn down the runway that could damage an aircraft.

IMPORTANT
You must bring 2 forms of identity with you, at least one bearing a photograph e.g Passport, Photo Driving Licence. No ID, no entry I’m afraid, like I said above this is a real Air Base with real security so I.D is important.

If you want to save £10 then copy and paste the text below into word, print it out and send it to the address in the text.

*All vehicles taking part will be required to pass a safety inspection before being allowed on the airfield. Bike riders must have full safety clothing and helmet. Drivers of cars that are not road legal and have been race developed will need safety harnesses fitted. At the discretion of the Scrutineer, the driver may need to wear a helmet (if you would normally wear a helmet to drive a race developed car then bring it). Participants of the event undertake the event at their own risk.

Just so those who haven’t been before can see, here is an aerial shot of the airfield.

Just to give you all some idea of the size of this place, the white aircraft you see in the middle of the pic are TriStars…these are a similar size to a 747 Jumbo!

The 1/4’s are done over the far side, just out of the picture, running towards ATC.

When there are about 8/10 cars/bikes at ATC, you are escorted to the far end of the runway, and sent off in pairs for a ‘top speed’ run

The exit used is actually off the pic, but you have approx 2 miles running before having to brake, and you can leave at a reasonable pace, as the exit is wide…and you can be doing 50 plus before tuning down the runway!!

LOTS of bikes there, as this is organised by the Brize Bike club, but cars are made very welcome, and they are very surprised how fast the GTO’s are…

Marty

I’ll be up for this.

I think this will be one NOT to miss  All the Nottingham crew are you reading this? We spoke about all doing a run to a 1/4 mile event. How about this with a top speed run?

Im in

Thanks Marty for bringing this to our attention

Mike

I do beleive I could make this date!

Mark

definately going although it’s just to watch, we had one here before at odiham i believe.

It’s not too far away either.

No problem.

I was disappointed they didn’t do it last year, but apparently they had to resurface large areas of the taxiways, as the aircraft jet blast was removing the surface…this included the area they do the 1/4’s

Rain doesn’t stop this event…I did my fastest 1/4 ever in pouring rain, and they actually asked us one year to run when it stopped raining so our wide tyres could help dry it out a little so they bikes could go again.

Please all be aware, this is a military base, you will require 2 forms of ID, with photos. Expect to have your picture taken for security purposes. Expect their to be armed guards at the gate. You will require escorting across to the event, but this is normally pretty slick.

They will scrutineer your car. They don’t want debris on the runway, it is NOT swept after each run…we take it in turns with the aircraft for the top speed run down the main runway!!

All proceeds are usually for a local charity, and I’m sure this year is no exception.

I will definately be there.

Marty

Count me in  i fancy a bit of that.

Julian.

I’ll be there!

Not sure if I’ll risk it up the runway though, depends what state the GTO is in by then…

Pay on the day.
Cash I expect, although I will check nearer the time.

I’m not sure how much they will charge this year…I’ll let you know when I find out.

A GTO has been the fastest car there for the last 2 times it has been run…can we do 3 in a row?
Marty

I will try this year can visit old haunts while there
