Santa Pod GTO RWYB

Myself, and a few other GTO/3000GTs, will be attending for a blast down the strip.

Nevermind the weather just come on down.

I’ll be there running my new set up providing it’s finished. The Eurospec guys are even doing night shifts to try to get it done.

I never realised but when Matt ran his 8.74 @ 168 it was a BAD run with no traction! They say his run should have netted 8.4 @ 170+ with traction.

We won’t be maxxed out for this but shoudl still be fast … or broken!

I will be running bigger turbos, hopefully more boost, better fuelling, a stand alone rather than a piggy back and bigger tyres than Matt ran.

Things could get exciting.

André

It will be an amazing thing to watch. Rather you than me! All I will say is take it easy as a few weeks ago the traction was very poor further down the track.

Anyway you know what you are doing. Any of the Eurospec team attending that you know?

cheers

James

I don’t think any of them are running but hopefully Ben will be there.

Why was the traction so poor a few weeks ago?

Me? Know what I’m doing?

I’ll know soon enough what I’ve got myself into, for sure!

The world waits with baited breath!!!

I think it was too cold. Although thinking about it since then they have had the FIA Finals- where I guess they prep the strip etc.

I think asking for perfect conditions at the end of October is a bit hopeful but it should be fun anyway.

James

I might get the car out & come on down & have a look if the weather looks ok

Julian.

The weather forecast has definitely improved Julian.

Yes should be there Andre, i want to see the beast unleashed but doubt i will run, more a day out for the car & say hello to a few people that are coming.

Cheers Julian.

make sure you get plenty of HD vids for us that can’t make it.

I’ll have my Contour GPS mounted to the roll cage, not only does it do HD but also 60 frames per second. When viewed on the contour.com website it plots the journey overlayed onto a satellite map showing the speed.

A few inconvenient problems to overcome before the car can be mapped tomorrow afternoon.

André

I did my first ever 1/4 mile here yesterday and the best time was 13.84s @ 99.94mph. There’s a video of one of the 5 runs here:

Nice Staff.

That just proves my point that these cars, when driven are 13 second cars all day long with just breathing mods.

I also noticed you didn’t have the best 60’ time at 2.1xx. Potentially there is a 0.3-0.4 second saving to be had there and I have heard whatever you save on the 60’ you double on the 1/4 time!

André

Thanks Andre.

So what do I have to do to get that 60’ time down? Is that all down to the way I launch it?

All I can do is tell you what works for me.

I launch between 5500-6000 rpm with a quickish clutch release. Enough revs not to bog but not too many revs so that you bounce off the limiter. Ideally you want your grip to be right on the edge of breaking away but not quite spinning up.

Gear changes - you need to figure out where your car makes its best torque and power. Time your gear changes so that you have the best torque and power available but bear in mind that each gear drops back in to a slightly different rev range.

For mine, 1st-2nd shift at 7500 dropping back in at 4500, 2nd to 3rd at 7000 dropping back in at 4500 and 3rd to 4th at 6500 dropping back in at 4800.

There is no point revving all gears to 7000 if your power has dropped off by 6750, likewise there is no point in dropping into the next gear at 4000 if you are only producing half of your maximum torque. It is about figuring out where you have the best coverage.

If you can face it, slam the gear lever to shift as quick as you can but try to time it to coincide with a stab and release of the clutch pedal. Lifting the accelerator is optional. Ben flat shifts, I don’t.

It’s not easy, like you said. There is a lot to think about in a short space of time and a lot of timing involved

André

Wow, thanks Andre. There really is a lot to think about. I’ll try out some of your suggestions between now an the next run, at the moment I just rag it and hope for the best

Using the above chart, you can see what the rpm differences is between gears and so pick the optimal rpm to shift and see what rpm you will drop into in the next gear.

Here’s my dyno sheet so you can see why I chose the shift points I did.

4250-7000 was probably my optimum HP area and 3900-6200 was probably my optimum torque.

Like you say though, it does all happen so fast and there is a natural tendency to let the revs run higher than is probably optimum.

You could also argue that a lower gear requires less power and torque to accelerate at the same rate as the next gear up will.
