Selected crankshaft bearings

Rob, any chance of doing an idiots guide to the sizes available on selected crank bearings. I’ve got my crank in for a re-grind and harden so I’m just after the sizes that correspond to the various colours.

If it’s being ground they will grind the journals to one size so you won’t need select fit bearings [hopefully]. Just plastiguage it with the bearings they supply to be certain.

Mark.

Thanks Mark,

See a post just like there used to be…

Nice one boys!!

Cheers Rob

Thank you gentlemen, much appreciated, you learn something new everyday.

Just for info the, two colours below are missing from the list

Black part number MB197606
and
Brown part number MB197607

Are missing from the list. Not sure what roman numerals they use for those. 1V and V ? You will not need them anyway, if you have reground your crank you dont need to know what the original size was.

Do a search for Jatich or tim777jet and you find a link to the colours and sizes. Some guys just use Clevite shell which i have been told are one size only. On the 3SI site there are links to pages and pages where guys are plastigauging their cranks.

I purchased an extra set of Mitsi standard Big end shells, they are unopened if you need them pm me.
cheers tim

For further info:-

Bear in mind when you buy a new crank it will also be sized (eg coloured) and will have a corresponding colour. So depending on your crank and your block your bearing colour will vary. There are some bearing tables ont web somewhere (if I find a link i will add here).

As far as I can tell later blocks have the same main bearing sizing - ie you won’t get a I and a II etc.

If you use Clevites you can get in spec no problem but you should plastigauge. As far as I found out Clevites are nominally the same size as red (or maybe pink). They are on the smaller size for the bearings - this makes sense as it means they will work for pretty much every crank and block size combination.

Also bear in mind that Mitsi bearing clearances are on the tight side 0.04 - 0.02 mm. The limit is 0.1 mm. Most research will suggest aiming for the 0.04 mm to 0.05 ish mm. If you go too tight you may increase your chances of a spun bearing.

In my build my new crank was marked white, my block stamped as III III III III. This meant I was looking at Brown bearings. I used standard Clevites and my clearances came out around 0.05 mm. I was happy with this as I wanted the larger clearances - helps reduce temperature etc. My oil pressure is currently brilliant and all my oil changes to date have been spot on. The last one at 1171 miles showing no metal swirly particles.

To be honest I found researching the bearings and clearances etc a right pain - but then I was try to understand the whole sodding process down to what size each bearing was likely to be. It appears that all the different block sizings and crank sizings and bearing colours are in steps of 0.006 mm.

I think as more rebuilds are done it will become easier for everyone to understand.

I also notice that Rob now lists the various coloured mains on his website which should make life easier for everyone.
