I am changing all the coolant hoses and have noticed a build up rusty residue in the coolant system pipes is there anything I can flush the system through with after I have fitted the new pipes before i refill it with antifreeze mixture. Cheers.
Absolutely. Garden Hose.
Flush everything you can through with plenty of clean water.
Back flush the radiator, ie pump water in from both top and bottom.
Run until water comes out Clean. May take a little while.
If you are changing the hoses, consider replacing the thermostat while you are doing the work. At least remove to aid flushing. If not replacing it, remove seal and boil in pan of hot water to check it works.
When mixing coolant a 25% mix is what you need for summer use.

Thanks Marty I shall do that, I may as well throw in a new thermostat while i’m at it.

Flush the engine out also, while doing the radiator.
You will be amazed how much nasty stuff comes out.
When It comes to coolant, remember, the water does the cooling. The antifreeze is just that. An antifreeze, and also a corrosion inhibitor. This does not aid in cooling the engine.
So, 25% mix in summer, 50% mix in winter.
If topping up, try and top up with mixed coolant, but if you can’t, in summer, top up with water.
Tap water has lots of impurities in it, minerals and the like, so a pre mixed commercial coolant is never a bad idea.
Hope this helps
Marty
I did this a few years back at about 100,000 miles, using the exact same technique that @Marty_K marty has suggested, you won’t believe the amount of crap that comes out of the engine and how long it can take aswell.
hi. there are various system flush liquids on the market wynns do a good rad flush this also flushes the system . most are but ensure its an acid free additive you use
I have also heard people swear by putting a dishwasher tablet in the header tank and driving it for a few days then dropping the coolant
Craig
Thank you for all the advice, I will use the hose and tap method while I have all the hoses off. Cheer’s.
