Thank you to Andy

So the age old question are these cars expensive to run comes up again and again.

Thanks to a tip off from @Beanus I got a fantastic deal on rear brakes.

Lets put this into context

I have ;
a mitsi colt 1.1
mitsi Lancer 2.0 ralliart
Mitsi GTO

I was recently quoted just under £400 plus Vat to change the discs and pads on the colt, not happy with that I went to euro car parts and got discs and pads for well under £100 and did the job myself took 1 hour with a most parts seized.

I was then quoted similar price for the Lancer, same again discs and pads, not happy with the price I went away and bought ‘mild’ performance parts (brembo) and got a great deal just over £100 for discs and pads (bere in mind this is the top of the performance level for that model of lancer and hence more expensive to run)

So been stuck on the GTO for some years, last bought EBC discs about 10 years ago best part of £300 plus pads another £100. Was looking at upgrading to a BBK on the rear but was just waiting for the right time as I’ve absolutley run the ebc disks into the ground.

Anyway waited and waited and waited kept sticking on 2nd hand pads getting more free life out of the pads, took the discs off refurbed them to get some more life out of them, then finally the right deal came along Got a great deal on rear pads £15.00 and thanks to @Beanus just got a set of DBA’s on the rear for just over £100.00

Literally 15 mins a side with no seized parts not even £130 for disks and pads, that’s mental for what is meant to be an expensive car to run. No one in my family ever believes me when I tell them it costs sod all to maintain these cars… now I have proof, bet they can’t get their Merc’s done that cheap lol.

Cheers Andy!!

No worries @gavin_naish which ones did you get, slotted or drilled?

Not a bad price.

Mine showed up today too. I’ll be changing them soon.

Both. Slotted and drilled.

Personally I wouldn’t put crossed drilled discs on a Gto again , on my Ap set up I had hair line cracks around the holes , this isn’t uncommon on crossed drilled discs on these either , just keep an eye on them for crazing , I made sure my next set were slotted only , at 500 quid for front discs I didn’t really want to change them too quick

Craig

These are rears so hopefully wont take as much grief as the fronts but yeah we’ll have to wait and see.

The discs which came on my car had the issue of fine cracks coming from where the holes were drilled. I worried about this and had to swap them out for new ones.

The new EBC front discs are drilled and they are fine, had some good drives on them with heavy braking as well. I suspect it is a matter of getting a good well made set which are drilled then hardened. Rather than hardened then drilled.

I think I would shy away from drilled at the front due to the reasons Gavin mentioned but for the rear I think it’ll be alright, they still get hot but not nearly as much as the front.

DBA’s are the tits.

Where did these come from then Andy?

I could do with new rears, but would consider all round at that cost.

DBA Discs are currently no longer in production for our cars and i have been, along with the European distributor trying to i get the factory to put them back into production again for a couple of years now.

However they are resisting doing this, but i will endeavour to contact them again and see what i can do.

There is currently no stock of any of the Front larger 314mm brakes, but i do have some stock of the Front smaller 296mm ones for the MK1 if any one is interested and i can do deals on them with pads etc…

If any one is interested give me a call

Cheers Rob
