Hi, Newbie from South Scotland!
I’m thinking of buying a mk1 GTO, non turbo manual. I had a question about the insurance though, when I run the insurance through comparison sites they always show up as twin turbo’s when they are not, yet they are about £1000 cheaper than the actual TT’s. The only reason I am looking at the non turbo is because the TT’s are just too expensive for me to justify right now.
Does anyone know why this is?
Also, any general tips and advice when looking at one? anything major to look for that tends to go wrong?
Thanks a bunch!
-Connor
Hi,
Check if there is any history for/to the car, also there is a buyers guide on here, not sure if you can access that though. Also when looking one over take a look, via the dipsticks, at the engine oil and autobox oil colour.
Someone on here will be able to help, there are good ones and there are bad ones so be careful.
Terry
Hi Connor! I thought the same before I bought one but then discovered the MK1’s can be insured with classic car insurance whuch is only about £170! I was getting quotes as rediculous as £3000 & the cheapest I found was about £1500 until someone said it qualifys for classic car insurance! Give that a try! I’m with Footman James, 3000miles per year that gets me, drive to work & for a twin turbo import. Hope that helps but each insurance company differs from person to person but classic car is generally a lot cheaper
Ali
Thanks I saw that after I posted this and had a glance. will read it more carefully closer to the time. thanks a lot
Thanks I never even thought of that! Would need more than 3k miles though as it would be a daily too (expensive for a daily I know, but worth it in my book). Thanks
I dunno if the mileage affects the price…doubt it they aren’t really strict on when you give it & you don’t have to take a photo or anything…think it may just be estimated mileage maybe? Worth looking into though. Most peoples classic quotes seem to be around the same price so mileage might not affect it much. Let us know how you get on
Yea, I’m looking at it right now, though I’m only 22 so a lot of classic unsurers wont insure me best I can seem to find is around £940 annually for a non turbo (even though it reads as a TT on the insurance site). any suggestions of good companies for classic insurance that might work?
Try ringing up specialists…I found the compare sites a bit rubbish for me personally but everyone is different.
Try Footman James, Adrian Flux or Sky insurance (can’t remember the others)
Footman James number is: 03332076101
Always best to ring up I find for these cars. I’m only 30 so mine was stupid prices with most insurers
alright, i will try that thanks a bunch much apreciated.
From memory i thought it was was because they didnt recognise them as imports but picked the closest one which was the TT. That’s what admiral did to me.
But then they charged me loads more when they did realise what it was. Def go to the specialists and negotiate.
I am with Footman James too. I am 26 (25 when I got my insurance) and mine was under £150 for a Mk1 TT (not an import). As Ali said it is better to call them. Greenlight is another one. Put aside a day to ring as many companies as possible and get quotes. For each one write down the company, the price, and a quote number. Then simply go with the cheapest. Mention to them all (especially Flux and Footman James) that you are a member here and its usually worth something. You might need your membership number which someone can provide you with on here.
Thanks everyone, I will definately do that and shop around. so if I put the non turbo in as an import as it should actually be, its actually more expensive than a TT so may as well just go for a TT and call around with some decent insurance companies. thanks a lot
Just shop around. I paid £1100 fully comp when I purchased my UK 3000GT 4 years ago, I was 21 at the time. Since then the price has done nothing but drop, I currently pay £680 fully comp with no excess (took a policy to cover it, included in the price) and able to drive third party cars with an upto £20k payout for the vehicle I am driving (additional policy again but included in price).
I tried classic one year but the limited mileage does make a difference, they ask for you to send them a disclosure of the mileage. You could lie but if you got caught, say crashed before you reached what you wrote down or went over they could invalidate your policy.
I have been looking around for a bit now, but the best I can seem to find for a TT is around £2300
So the classic insurance wants you to drive a very specific amount is what you are saying? you can’t go over, but you can’t do less either?
having said that, I just ran a quote on google’s insurance comparison site and got an offer for £998 annually… I dont really understand how this insurance malarky all works…
No what Steve means is most classic policies will ask you to declare the mileage at the start of the policy so you tell them how many miles you’ve got, then if you have a crash and you have gone over your annual mileage they will invalidate your insurance. So some people choose to lie and tell them the mileage is say 5000 less than it is which gives you more miles a year but if you crash before you have done those 5000miles then they will realised you lied and again invalidate your insurance. Think footman james have a fairly reasonable limit on mileage from memory. Maybe up to 7000miles but I can’t remember exactly.
You should be able to get it cheaper than that. Have you called Footman James and Adrian Flux? Worth a discussion with them as they will negotiate down. I went from £900 odd down to £350ish because I negotiated with them on the phone.
Adrian Flux offer other policies as well as classic insurance so there may be a couple of options there.
From what I understand the mileage is upto that amount and it doesn’t matter if you do less. the thing to be aware of is that you dont get no claims on a classic policy as they are usually for a second car, however, they are usually cheaper.
ah ok, i get you now, thanks a lot, yea, i just had a quick look there, will have a sit down some time in the next couple of weeks and call up all the companies and see.
Thanks a lot for your help guys, really apreciate it, you have all been helpful and friendly
When I had a policy from Adrian Flux the under writer said anything over 10k wasn’t classed as limited. I got over the 10k and it wasn’t much more for me to be honest.
