1993 3000 GT Twin Turbo - Failing to start and Introduction

Hi Everyone!

New to the 3000GT scene and this forum but hoping to get to be part of the family here!

I purchased my GT the other night, it had been parked up for 2-3 years prior to me purchasing it from the trader. He did have it running but I wasn’t sure if he was being truthful or not but for me; this car was worth the risk! She’s a 1993 model imported in 2006. Covered only 83,000 KM (51,000 miles) the bodywork has faded and some areas the clear coat has started peeling but I’m hoping the polisher will assist with the majority of the paint fade! She has the standard cloth interior which is in good condition but just needs a good clean, I will document everything and post up on here as I go and when time suffices

On to the really bad bit, she’s having a starting problem and I’m not that familiar to these cars or mechanically minded :frowning:

When I tried starting the car, she cranked over but just continued to crank, eventually the battery died and had to be jumped by another car; I tried this again, still cranked but again failed to start! After a few attempts I could see smoke coming from the front of the engine around the alternator area and smelt like burnt wiring / coils. I’ve sourced an alternator but will take a few days for it to be ready (needs to be reconditioned) I’m just worried as to why the alternator was smoking and if there’s something common that would have caused this?

Any help would be appreciated, I should be swapping the alrernator over on Monday after 3pm so will post an update once fitted and tested!

Look forward to getting to know everyone,
Hussy

Be careful mate as it may not be the alternator. If you were cranking for ages then it could potentially be the starter motor beginning to show signs of packing up/overheating from contant cranking, it does sit very close to the alternator.

Regarding the starting problem itself, you should check if you have spark and if you have fuel getting to the cylinders.

What corner of the UK are you from?

Post up some pictures of the car too.

Morning mate, I’m from South East (Luton, Bedfordshire) Thanks for the quick reply, she’s no longer cranking over. I think the battery has died, did try jump starting it yesterday off the Porsche but it wiped the Porsche battery out too :joy::joy: will get a battery charger and leave it plugged in for a few hours and then try for spark! Here’s a few pics of the GT and the Porsche :+1:t4:

There are a few members in the Luton area from hopefully some of them will chime in and maybe offer a hand.

I would be very careful at the moment as it’s entirely possible you have burnt out your starter motor if it longer cranks at all.

Charge the battery fully and try again but don’t crank for too long 5 secs each time, MAX.

Check for spark, fuel.

Check for loose connectors, wiggle wires etc…

Let us know what happens.

Hi huss
Welcome to the club.
I have just been through this problem myself.
As Andy said first thing to check is spark/fuel.
Check for this and get yourself a full membership.Best £20 you will spend on the car I promise. I am only in bedford. If it is no spark no fuel i will happily pop over to you and show you all the possible problems it could be that I came across.

Hi

Maybe it chould be the knock sensor or some other senor on the engine, if its not fuel or spark.
Is the “check Engine” light on?

What a brilliant forum, I’ve been part of a few before and the support is literally overwhelming! Yep that was the one but the trader I bought it from advertised the car as running but when I got there after a 3 hour drive it wasn’t running to which after such a long trek with a recovery truck, I ended up taking the car as I had been after one for ages! Not too familiar with these cars but if anyone is willing to lend me a hand please do drop me a message or call on 07534548457 and I would be incredibly appreciative. Honestly I would even pay you to fix, if not help diagnose the fault

No check engine lights bud :frowning:

Thank you John, if it’s not too much hassle for you. Please PM me your number and we’ll talk :+1:

Perfect bud! What would be the best way to check for spark/fuel - I’m as limited on mechanics as I am tools :joy::joy:
