Had enough

Well had new gto for week and back in same boat lost all gears no warning at all driving perfect till today any ideas

is it an auto???

Hi Tracey I assume it’s an auto na if so is box overheating?

Yeah it is auto and it did get very hot fan on front seems to have stopped working… Would this do a lot of damage

I think and maybe wrong but would assume the fan will not only cool the engine but also oil in the box someone correct me please is wrong ? @gavin_naish ?

When we bought car the fan was on all the time for some reason today not on and hot day

Then it was prob a switch bypass to make fan stay on all the time to sell it tbh and it’s now burnt out fan could also be the jumper wire if they have messed about with it.
Is the oil in the engine white or creamy colour ?

No don’t think it’s cooked but how long do as it take would water get in oil straight away I’m so worried
… We still have the other gto for parts

What’s the year of the Gto mk1 are controlled via a switch and mk2 is controlled via the ecu for fans on the twin turbo think this is the same on a late auto

Do you mean the rad fan isn’t working, as yes this could lead to a major failure if massively overheated. I guess the first thing would be things would start shutting down.

Car is 91 mk1 it was really hot temp gauge didn’t go up n stopped car soon as gears started going funny

Would have a good look tomorrow in good light and check fan wiring hasn’t been tampered with and take off coolant cap the one on engine and check the water there.
Was the car a private sale ?

Yes it was private sale from Stafford… Gorgeous car… Maybe bit bias there lol
Came with a lot of history all mot’s receipts for loads although there are signs of neglect

In which case it could just be the fan switch although for it to be stuck on all the time would have thought switch bypassed I’ve never seen a fan switch fail in a stuck on position but could be wrong? Have you checked fuses and fan relay stupid question prob, have you spoke to the pervious owner about it may save you some time looking for stuff that’s not there just depends how genuine they are I suppose .

Only checked fuses so far will look at rest tomorrow last owner went crazy with black paint on lights n instead of repairing leaky valve on tyre I think he welded cap on it lol… Tyres were cracked badly people don’t realise how expensive it can be to keep these cars

Yes it’s very expensive if you can keep your other one for parts it’s worth a hell of a lot more to you than selling it

I would also imagine that if the previous owner was a bodger you will find it is a bodged fan and may yet come across many more :joy: in all honesty sounds like the fan was wired on to hide problems

I hope it is only fan… We haven’t any where to keep old car so just taking little things off then scrap…

I would take out engine ecu and def auto ecu they are worth £150 each I know I’ve sold these for that also heater panels go for £50 loads of other bits make up money coils, ptu ,maf etc but if you can it’s better to keep them for diagnosing faults
Where are you based maybe a member close by that can look for you ?

Don’t know if there are any members in Swansea… But car is still the same how can they go so perfect then gearbox just stops… Anyone know if there is something behind radio unit that can cause problems as both gearboxes stopped working after radio unit fitted
… Any help appreciated as don’t want to go back down Road of changing box and same problem exists
