Jtuner Magazine thrash invite

Hi,

As you can see from my username I work for Jtuner magazine, hopefully you’ll be aware of the magazine by now and the ‘thrash’ type feature we run each month. For those of you who haven’t seen it, we get eight owners together for a fourteen-page feature in the magazine highlighting the tuning potential of a certain model.

So we’d like to get eight of you to come to Bruntingthorpe proving ground in Leicestershire for a day with the timing gear and a two-mile straight…

First thing to say is that it’s a no stress day out, we attach Datron satellite activated timing gear to the car and you have four attempts at getting times you’re happy with from a standing start, these are in succession and there isn’t time to swap gear between cars and runs I’m afraid. It’s up to you how hard or easy you want to take it, we record 0-60, 0-100, ¼ mile with terminal speed and top speed.

The main emphasis of the day is to show you the owners and your cars in a positive way, encouraging non-owners to read and learn more about your chosen Japanese motor.

So, here’s the deal.

*Aside from any travel expenses you might incur the day is completely free for you. We pay for the track and timing gear.

*We are strictly limited to one car on track at any time and eight cars on track in a holding area plus our own. So no spectator cars, support vehicles etc. No exceptions.

*We deliberately book these days with short notice so people don’t build or modify cars especially for the day, sorry if that doesn’t fit in with you personal circumstances but there will be further opportunities in the future.

*Bruntingthorpe has a strict noise policy in place, with an 89Db limit at 4000rpm. If you have a very noisy exhaust it may be worth doing something about it before coming. We have had 600-800bhp turbocharged cars go through okay, so it’s not as strict as you may think.

*We will be on track all day, 9.30am start, there is a café and toilet located at the other end of the track, but this is two miles away. So come prepared with food and drink.

*It might sound stupid, but you will do upwards of 17miles on track, so make sure you’ve got enough fuel, including getting to the nearest petrol station when leaving (it’s ten miles to some Optimax)

Right, if any of that sounds appealing we’ve got a date, and it’s next week… Thursday the 15th. So what do you say? Anybody game for it? Eight cars would be great…

Here’s a link to Bruntingthorpe’s website, so you know where you’re going.

I hope this is of interest to you, we’ll all be there and look forward to meeting you. These days are our highpoint each month as they’re always good fun.

Cheers, Bryn

Id be up for this even though i am standard - only 20 mins away and i can get the time off too!

Fantastic! We need everything from standard to fully modified… So is that number one on the list? If so, add yourselves as you go along…

1- J@mes - Standard

Almost any GTO TT will fail that with a non-standard exhaust.

For example my car makes 99.5 db at 4K RPM … measured by the marshals at Japfest.

Almost all GTO’s Iv seen made 95 db’s

Mark Flooks makes 114 db at 4K …

1 week is not enough notice. Nobody here would be willing to rebuild a car for ‘nail it’ in one event - even if it would give you a nice magazine article.

If you can do this at another venue then Im up for it - as would some of the other GTOUK members.

89 db = no chance IMO though …

Adam

I’ll do it… must make my exhaust quieter tho

“get our club, cars and members noticed” - one of the main points of the AGM this year. Surely this is one of the best chances we have of showing the rest of the Japanese car world that the GTO is not the heavy, slow car that they all think it is!

Ive had a noise test done at Brunters, I didnt even get to 4k before the tester was walking back to me with a sticker ready. Its a working airfield ffs, surely they have more to deal with than a few cars! I doubt it is strictly enforced as Brunters isnt having the same problems that combe is - ie no-one is trying to shut it down!

and i doubt there is any other venue that could be used - iirc brunters has the longest straight of them all.

people should be getting their names down, its our chance to shine.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for those notes. I appreciate the noise issue, most vehicles are questionable at such low Db, however as stated within reason and we can get them through, so 114Db is way too high but a more realistic sub 100 figure is doable. I realise this is a rather ambiguous thing to say after stating there’s an 89Db blanket, but the guys at Bruntingthorpe wish to see us run as much as we do. So within reason, you should be fine… Like I said providing the majority conform, the odd high-end bandit should be fine.

We usually give one to two weeks notice and that has worked so far, any more and people usually start stripping things down, swapping about and changing places causing confusion and in the past we’ve been messed about royally at the last minute. In no way is this a ‘nail it’ type of event. As stated you can go as hard or easy as you please, it’s a good platform to advertise the club and the car to non-members and a chance for us to give something back to the community that pays our bills.

In short, if you car is running, you can get a day off work in a weeks time and you don’t mind driving to Leics, you’re in.

As for the venue, Bruntingthorpe is it I’m afraid. There’s no other that provides us with what we need. Trust me, I’m in Somerset, the office is in Bath… We have thought about this.

Sorry if it’s not convenient for you at this time

That’s the spirit! That’s what this day is meant to be about.

Oh, and people are trying to shut down Brunters. One local has sworn to make it his life’s work to do so. The older locals are all fine as they can remember 747s and even B52s coming into land. Blame it on trains into London and commuting solicitors… Anyway, I digress. How’s that list?

I know you guys are in Bath … my brother drinks with one of your staff (cant remember who tho …).

OK - my cars in a million bits at the moment - but there is an outside chance if I pull out all the stops that it could be ready … running on a rough map tho.

Im very much a provisional … verging on the unlikely.

If any of the clubs other big guns can find the time to make it that would be cool … if this is a magazine feature we need the very best of us represented.

So … calling all those on the GTOUK quicklist … do your best for your car and your marque!

Adam

Yes please. 8)
I’d love to have a go.

Car is running well, and I can make it.
Shouldn’t have any problems with the noise restrictions

If it’s okay for me to participate, then I’ll start looking up directions

Many Thanks
Marty

So…

1 - J@mes
2 - Button Monkey?
3 - Marty
James?

I would love to do this, but I have to teach next week. I may try and get the guys at M&S to bring mine. Would be nice to see the only running supercharged GTO run in this. We have a 3000GT, how about an NA volunteer? Homer, Miller?

Spoke to M&S and the SC GTO will be there! I will not be driving, but my brother Stef from M&S will be behind the wheel. He is a Santa Pod veteran, so no worries there.

Excellent, look forward to seeing it. Thanks for making such an effort!

i would of been well up for this. even with the 300 mile drive but cars not back together yet never mind tuned. :x

I think we have it at:

1 - J@mes
2 - Button Monkey
3 - Marty(Roadkill)
4 - Msassoon’s GTO(Stef Driving)

That’s 4 volunteers, must be able to make the eight required
Marty

Put me down for the day.
I’ve never yet booted the old thing hard off the line but was thinking about giving it a go.
I’ll have to make sure I get ahead in marking my A level scripts to take the day off!
Details of me and my car on my blog site, below.

I’m up for this…

Can we get some of the big guns to sign up to this!

Looking at the fastest 1/4mile times thread, I suspect a few cannot participate in this…those that can I am sure we will hear from

This is the list:

  1. benh - 12.01 @ 116.67 mph

As far as I am aware is okay, possible runner???
