Logging Cables

Was hoping to do this before Xmas but was busy.

I am able to make up cables for the TMO, MMCD and IPAQ logging software. I will also in a couple of weeks have a supply of propper ECU plugs (Thanks JC, ‘button monkey’ for the part numbers etc) rather than the more comonly used spade connectors.

They will be at cost and with spade connectors work out at about £3 each + postage. Once I have the ECU plugs then the cost will be a pound or so more but will make it easier to use etc.

If anyone is interested then let me know and I’ll start making them.

Dave

I thought it was the same cable in all cases. I want to test all 3 programs, so if I need 3 cables, then so beit. I’ll wait until you get the proper plugs.

I want to place the palm/iPaq in the bottom right of the windscreen, so I guess the cable needs to be about 2 meters(?), by the time it is run along/under the dash

Cheers,
J

The cables are the same for Palm and IPAq but the PC cable needs a female socket instead of a male and the components are connected the oposite way in the headshell. So you could get away with two cables.

Hi Dave,

Id like to get hold of a plug to replace the spade connectors as and when you get them sorted?

Cheers
Scott

Hi,

does your cable work with a laptop ? if so, with what software ?

Cheers

John

Hi Dave

Could you put me down for a palm cable with ECU plug. ( approx 1.5 meters in length )
Just PM me with cost and mailing address.
Thanks
Michael

Dave, when you use these does it disable the ABS? If so will you be making them with switches to override this problem.
If you’re making them with the switches I’d be interested in one for a laptop - if neccessary I’ll pay the differance, I like my ABS.

rodger

I would also like an abs switch if possible,

Cheers,
J

All you need to do is reset the ABS, i did this buy installing a push to break switch from maplins (£0.95) inline with the signal cable and hey presto a reset ABS.

You just have to remember to push it every time you start the engine

I would think it is possible to build a timer onto the same printed circuit board using something like a NE555 timer IC that keeps the signal wire lifted for say 90 seconds then connnects.

The ABS is then connected as normal and then is no longer in test mode.

What do you think guys…For one of you lot this would be childs play…

Just an idea…Rob

The ne555 timer would be a very accurate timer, if you want to make a simple one a resistor and capacitor inline will give you a time delay, resistance x capacitance = time

The time in this formula is the time to acquire 63% of the voltage value of the source. It is also the discharge time if we were discharging the capacitance. Should the capacitance in the figure above be 4U7 (4.7 uF) and the resistance was 1M ohms (1,000,000 ohms) then the time constant would be T = R X C = [1,000,000 X 0.000,0047] = 4.7 seconds. These properties are taken advantage of in crude non critical timing circuits.

I’ll think about a simple circuit for anyone to make up, or any volunteers.

Going back to the original thread subject, I’ll have one for a PC please Dave, with the proper connector, it’ll get rid of the gender changer and I can then use the original on a palm.

I assume this is the signal wire to the ABS unit which is then set to ebug mode. If someone can let me know which wire this is then I’d be happy ot make up some little box’s people can wire into this line to reset the ABS.

Rob, Mark do you know which wire we need ot put this in line with?

I’m also going to have a look tomorrow at putting a switch in the 9 pin housing to switch between palm and PC. Will let everyone know once I get a good prototype sorted. It will however put hte cost up by a few pence. Still cheap though.

Dave

I will take one cable of each type, one for pc and one for palm. Please let me have details for making a payment to you.

Switched would be ideal, but unswitched is fine.

Hi Dave put me down for a palm cable and ecu connector please i have already got 2 serial hotsync cables do you want me to post you one so you can fit the ecu diagnostic plug onto it?

Robert.

Robert

I will have confirmation on Wednesday when the ECU plugs are due to me. Once I have this I’m happy to put a plug on a cable for you. Obviously a small charge for the plug and postage though. I’ll put a note on here once I have them. Until then its spade connectors only I’m affraid.

Dave

555 as per robs suggestion is what I have, the 555 has sufficient capacity to switch a relay.

Can you let me have a diagram of what you have with where its connected. Once I have something that works I cna make one up and case it in resin to try.

I inserted a push to make switch into the BLACK wire, which i think is ground 0v.

When i pushed the switch i used to get the flickering of the ABS light in the clocks then heard the mechanical test as i drove off.
So i asume that was ok.

I suggested doing the NE555 timer thing to get the reset automatic and to save someones life if they forgot to reset the ABS

I have today removed all my pocket logger and bits as i have a new gizmo which reads the data at 60mps instead of 3mps that the pocket logger and such does.

it also does not need any other gizmos to reset the ABS an it does not put the ABS into self test mode.

When i have tested this and found out if it does all the manufactures said it does then i will be selling them.

And boy does this thing monitor everything.

with simple add on you can log boost as well as every single engine parameter at once…

will post a full report when i have completed it.

Cheers Rob

i would like cables too please.
pc and palm would be great, let me know how to pay you for cables and a little for your time.

cheers Mark

hi mate put me down for one to go to a pc please with the connector if poss. let me know were and how much.

cheers stu

I’ll take a pc cable please. Let me know where to send the dollars
