Good luck mate!
Hi guys,
So I finally have a GTO! Hurray! Although it has some problems it seems in pretty good condition. I would say that it definitely falls under the restoration category though. The problems it seems to have are:
Valve stem seals could do with replacing.
Alternator doesnāt seem to be charging the battery.
MIGHT be a leak, havenāt had a proper look yet though.
Clutch is on its way out but it came with a new clutch kit which I should be able to fix.
And thats it as far as I can tell, the car is currently at the garage awaiting for its MOT on Tuesday and yes I know it will fail, Iām just doing it for an accurate check list of things I need to fix.
Quick question before I sign off, can you use an Alternator from a Non-turbo model in a turbo model? Probably a noob question but you never know!
Will try to upload some photos in the next few days. Oh and lastly the car is amazing, looks amazing, sounds amazing and drives amazing. Literally feel like Iāve just bought a super car!
James
Hi James
you can but the TT has a higher out and the car needs this believe me, so i would strongly suggest getting the correct alternator.
Cheers Rob
Why arenāt you at japfest???
Terry
Congrats on the purchase. Doesnāt sound like too big of a list. Fingers crossed there are no nasty surprises from the MOT man. Get some pics up asap!
Excuse the terrible picture quality, was taken at like 1 in the morning
I think we may still have an alternator for sale if you need one let me know.
Neil.
Iāve ordered one from PMA as I can get it by tomorrow. Worrying thing is I go on holiday on Thursday so kind of want it done by then. I do have a question though (this is probably going to sound really silly) whats the difference between the Mk 1 engine and Mk2?
As always thanks for all the help, will be signing up when I get back off holiday!
Regards
James
Mk1 and Mk2 engines differ in the 2 bolt vs 4 bolt crank girdle, mk2 has forged crank, cam vs crank angle sensor. There may be more @GSXRKID will know more!
Lots of differences, sensors wiring looms etc, its possible to put mk2 engine in mk1 car just will require some work arounds.
@nas and @beanus know more as they have just finished a mk2 engine swap on Neilās ml 1
Here she is, such a monster!
Went for a proper drive today and firstly I must say that, this car is simply amazing, Iām shocked not more people own them!
This is the TT model and that scares the ā ā ā ā outta me every time I hear them spooling up! Still a lot of work to do but looking forward to the outcome.
She is rather lush, looking forward to meeting her in person
I do like them in white now , colour has grown on me over the years , money no object for me would be a white 99 with a healthy 600hp on tap just for those fun moments we all need .
Craig
Nice looking car James. Enjoy the power now because you will soon get used to it and want more! haha
Nice I looked for a white one when I was shopping last, that looks great
Neil
Grrr I wanna white one now time for a rap
That what i am building next for a customer Craig !!
I intend to do a build thread on it
So this is a few of the things that needs attention, what do you guys think? Thanks again and in advance for all your help
Very nice mateyā¦ Iām with the others on the whiteā¦ Plus itās a mk1, tick, plus it has the moon roof, tick and itās a ttā¦
The fails need to be done to be Road worthyā¦ The gaiters are dirt cheap from evilempireperformance.co.ukā¦ The rear pads sound like they want changing but whilst youāre at it you may as well have a look at the rear shoes which could explain the hand brakeā¦ All relatively cheap to do if your any good with spannersā¦
The blue smoke could be a number of reasonsā¦ Its definitely oil which is being burntā¦ Could be turbo seals /piston rings or something more sinisterā¦ Iād find the cause of this before plunging money into her on other thingsā¦
Either way good luck with her and there is a wealth of experience and advice on here should you need itā¦
