As Justin said I would find the source of the blue smoke first before putting any more money into it. Could be a simple fix, could be terminal for the engine. On the whole though not too bad.
hiya mate, i have an NA for sale that genuinely has no problems with it. I think it was loved and cared for in Japan and really has some boot to it for an NA . Have a look at my for sale post and see what you think. I have never seen a GTO like mine on the road or or at a show. it is just crying out for a new owner. I have to get rid of as i will no longer be able to drive shortly. Cheers ā¦ Simon
Noob question, what is this? It came with the car Thanks in advance!
I have a brand new rack gaitor which I can post out to you if you only need the one (I only needed to replace one of mine a while ago). Easy fix - but youāll need to remove a track rod end to put the new gaitor on properly. If youāre careful getting the TRE off you wonāt disturb your steering alignment, i.e.count the turns it takes to unscrew the TRE from your track rod etc. You may well daamage the TRE when separating it from the steering arm, in which case youāll need to get a new one.
Brake pads are generally easy, but, one item that does screw it up is/are the pad retaining pins. They can seize in their positions, and become really difficult to withdraw from their insert holes. Avoid trying to punch them out - the ends will flare and youāll never get them out without a lot more work. Do you have the Mk1 brake caliper set up? Some later Mk1ās have later Mk2 type calipers, and are a little larger in disc diameter.
Iām doubtful about wear to the handbrake brake shoes. These serve only to keep the car stationary once the car has stopped - they do not have a dynamic braking function as such. Perhaps the play can be attributed to cable or handbrake adjuster end.
Suspension mounting point corrosion is common with these. As long as the bushes are ok, itās just a case of careful wire brushing and cleaning up.
Blue smokeā¦well, itās nothing dire. Either way, it sounds like it pulls well. Your culprits will be head valve seals, or oil control rings or turbo seals. Donāt worry too much, take your time with it, and eliminate one thing at a time. Start with a compression test to see where you are.
She looks a beauty - well done, and good luck with it.
Mike
Hi,
A week ago @leereed60 posted topic (thicker oil) that he cured his blue smoke problem by cleaning the PVC valve, must be worth a go as wonāt cost a penny.
I ended up buying another pcv valve the cleaning of the original one only lasted a while but the new one has cleared the blue smoke completely and restored the power. It was very easy to do - just a 5 min job. - Take your pcv out and clean it with carburettor cleaner and give it a shake - it makes a clicking sound if its ok but could still be bad. The clean may fix it but if it doesnt its worth buying a new one or getting a used one second hand. Another way to tell is if you use an oil additive like stop smoke and it still smokes as before its more than likey the pcv valve. Im no expert or mechanic just going on my experience, Best of luck! @jameswebb1989
Your pic looks like manifold gasket/heat shieldā¦ And Iām with the others on the pcv valueā¦ Mine had blue smoke when footing itā¦ I took mine off and left it in a bit of white spirit for a few days while I sorted other bits out, cleaned off with carb cleaner before putting back on and hey presto no more smokeā¦
Those parts are not from your car
Cheers Rob
Hi guys,
So been pretty busy over the last few weeks but I thought Iād update everyone as to how the car is getting on! She passed on the MOT today which is awesome so next up is fixing those pesky valve stem seals! Going to replace the oil (currently running 5W - 30) to 10W - 40 as its thicker.
Also, in talks with Eurospec in Guildford, can anyone let me know if they are decent? Would do it myself but I honestly donāt have the experience or knowledge to do a job like that! xD
Thanks again for all the help
Yes they are decent
Neil.
They are great! Ben at Eurospec knows his stuff! Wouldnāt trust anyone else with my carā¦put it this way I live in Liverpool & sent it all the way to Guildford!! They wonāt rip you off like so many have tried to do with me & they know the ins & outs of our cars & give honest advice of what does & doesnāt need doing!
Ali
You will be in very good hands with Eurospec , not only do they know these cars inside out but they live and breath cars in general , if you are on Facebook check out their page , not only do they spend long hours prepping their sponsored race cars they are are also supporting them at the weekends . Well worth the drive wherever you are in the country
Craig
So did you try cleaning the PVC valve that can cause the symptoms your car has.
I did, soaked it in white spirit until it looked clean. Also, there was this weird gunk holding the pipe onto the PCV valve? No idea what is what.
Just got off the phone to Ben over at Eurospec, he reckons its less likely to be valve stem seals and more likely to be valve guides or turbos. He also reckoned its going to cost a bomb and some to fix!
Looks like going to have to go at this solo so should be funā¦ kappa
Also, whats that strange tool that you need to replace the valve stem seals?
Thanks in advance
errr! is it tiny fingers
Terry
the special tool you refer to is only for the lifters. Unless you mean a spring compressor.
You canāt do it without whipping the cams, springs etc off. Hence the price you were quoted.
You can do it without taking the heads off but you need to be damn sure the cylinders you are taking the seals off are at the top of their stroke otherwise itās bye bye valve.
I have never done thatā¦ Honestā¦
Hi guys
Sorry havenāt posted in a while, been pretty busy! Work on the car is going well, this weekend finally planning to spend a few days to fix the seals so that should be good. On a not so good note, was previously with Admiral multi-car insurance policy and because I wasnāt the policy holder I didnāt mass any no claims bonus, so my insurance has shot up from 700 a year to just shy of 2000! FUN I guess you could say Iām committed, hope you are all well?
James
Have you tried insuring it as a classic car Ā£170 to Ā£200 dep on age no claims are not required check the insurance section look for my post
