New kid on the block

Yeah it was a very difficult decision to let her go but I have got used to the power and to push it any further would require a much bigger investment. Plus after a couple of years of RWD lunacy I fancied something that doesn’t make me cry in winter. So I looked at Celica GT-4’s and they just didn’t have as much potential. Worked on plenty of Scoobies and EVO’s and you see them everywhere and I like to be different. So I wound up at the GTO’s. Lots of potential, 4WD, Beautiful looks, and likely to start appreciating so I think now is the time to buy.

Thanks Max!
Yeah if I had one it would kill me to sell it! Could never sell my GTO either, only had it a few months but bought it for way over the odds & am currently saving to have a lot of work done at Eurospec! I never bought it with the intention of ever getting my money back or anywhere near my money back I bought it purely to cure my obsession with the car  so it would kill me to ever have to sell it!

Hi,

Welcome along Max, congrats on your new purchase, only a day to go now!! I’m just down the road in Brighton if you need anything! HHH data logger, ABS SRS diagnose and reset tool etc.

Chris

Hi Chris. Thanks for the welcome. That’s really good to know. I will keep it in mind!

Hey max welcome to the club  really pleased your finding us all a friendly bunch!

Well this weekend didn’t go as planned. Was just about to leave to go and pick up my GTO. And thought I would call the guy before I left and I couldn’t get hold of him. When I finally did 2 hours later he said he had been out trying to get the car to start and it wouldn’t. Luckily I had only given him a small deposit which I have asked him to send back to me and he has agreed. He did try and insist that he would get it going and all would be well but I just don’t trust it enough to buy it now. So I am still on the look out for a GTO. Not impressed at all :frowning:

Right I haven’t been disheartened and have found another GTO to go and look at. But I was wondering if someone could help me. From the pictures it looks like it has had the bumper and bonnet replaced so I am naturally thinking its had a front end bump. The wings and everything has pretty good paint work and the bonnet and bumper are in desperate need of a respray so definitely been replaced. The respray work doesn’t bother me. I have a friend who will do it cheap enough and the car is cheap and comes with a 6 month warrantee. My question is what should I be looking for underneath damage wise if it has had a front end shunt? Obviously structural work but more thinking things like intercoolers and radiators, pipework etc that’s likely to get damaged in that area.

Hi Max,

Sorry to hear about your weekend events, but better to find out sooner rather than when it’s too late  and cost you lots of :moneybag:

As regards your new find, great news and I’m sure when the ‘mechanically minded men type’ get home from work they’ll be along to advise you, me on the other hand would be chocolate fireguard input

Think we need an icon for ‘useless post’ lol mine can be the first, but I tried

Haha thanks Tracie. And I was definitely happy to find out before I handed over any more money. But I had been looking forward to it all week so was rather disappointed.
I am mechanically minded myself no not really after a full in depth description of how to check everything. But I haven’t spent much time working on these cars (read none other than spark plug change) so was interested to know how the front end is laid out and what is in the firing line from a light front end knock. I say light because if there is any structural damage what so ever I will walk away!

It may help to know which side?

N/S you have the radiator, Air con Condenser, oil cooler, n/s intercooler, alternator, all the pulleys and belts, cruise control.

o/s ABS pump, rad again, o/s intercooler. I believe there is also (not sure of correct name) a “brake fluid type chamber” I guess all the airbag sensors too. Check the airbag light illuminates (Recent Bad Experience of no bulb at all), can’t really think of much else off the top of my head. I apologise if this isn’t what you were asking, wasn’t trying to teach your grandmother to suck eggs. I think generally if there has been crash damage which has been repaired, it’ll stick out like a sore thumb.

I don’t know exactly what side. All I know is from the pictures it looks like the bonnet and front bumper have been changed so I am assuming it has had a knock and someone has replaced those panels. The wings look immaculate as does the rest of the body work so I would guess it was fairly central.

That was exactly the kind of info I was after though. Thanks dude!

To be honest if it looks like any structural members are damaged or have been replaced I will walk away. But if it is just cosmetic repairs I would be happy to take it on.

So car number 2 was a bust. I couldn’t see any major damage from the front end smash but they hadn’t replaced the bumper bar when they replaced the bumper and there was a small bend in the middle. It did occur to me to use it to get money off and then replace it but then I thought if they have skimped on a part which is presumably pretty cheap what else have they skimped on! So I walked away and am still on the look out!

If you mean the crash bar that runs in the space on the bumper, I have never seen one for sale. I have no idea how much Mitsubishi would charge, but I wouldn’t say anything on these cars were cheap.

Keep your eyes open mate, there will be one for you somewhere.

Maybe we can we help you, how much is your budget what are you looking for?

Yes that’s the one. Wasn’t a lot of damage and I am sure it would be fine. It just put me off that it had been repaired “on the cheap”. And yes they probably aren’t cheap but not expensive enough to just leave it.

I will do. It took me 9 months to find my S14 so I am in no hurry.

My budget is £5k but I would prefer to pay £3-4k and use the rest to give it a properly good service. When I got my S14 I took the engine out and checked the bottom end and replaced the oil pump and water pump etc etc… before I put the car on the road. Just wish I had included the head gasket in that as it blew 6 weeks later! Probably wont go that far with this one but would still give it a proper once over.
And I am looking for a very standard car as I like a blank canvas to work on. Must be twin turbo and manual. Mk1 or Mk2.

I know of a good black mk1 for sale very clean , ill PM you the details.

Very nice car it is too!

This car was going for a very good price, it is very clean and had some good money spent on it. I can find out if its still for sale if your interested. It was at about £2500.

It was low mileage and had loads of standard options extra.

I am not sure what wheels she has.

Neil.
