Hello all, I did join the old site but it seemed a bit of a ghost ship so got on here sharpish…
Just picked up a 1991 GTO non Turbo, well I say I picked it up but it was actually picked up by recovery vehicle as the autobox aint working…It was supposed to of had a reconditioned box fitted 10 years ago & then it sat unused in a workshop till now…Car drove fine for around 300km & then just will not engage any gears now?
It has plenty of fluid that is the correct red so not sure where to go from here to find the problem…As such any advice would be most welcome…
Any idea where the gearbox was supposedly reconditioned?
Please don’t say Gto doctor
Welcome to the club anyways
I have no idea where it was done, Gearbox was done then customer refused to pay the bill so car sat in workshop for 10 years till owner of workshop retired this year…
Thanks for the welcome…
I have had a quote from Graham to supply & fit another box which would be worse case scenario, only problem is I am in Wiltshire & he is right up north so getting car there would be a nightmare…
More than happy to pay to get the gearbox sorted as want this on the road asap as cant wait to have some fun, atm got a little FTO that I picked up a couple of weeks back but it did not satisfy the GTO need hence this one lol…
Swapping gearboxes in the autos isn’t as simple as just swapping a manual box , I don’t mean this physically either .
There are different ecus different solenoids and harnesses across the years , one of our members @AlanGTO has quite a bit of knowledge on these as does @Marty_K, I haven’t seen Alan about for a while though . There is quite a lot of info on the site regarding the auto boxes though and things Alan has found out
Craig
Also an option is Ben at eurospec in Guildford… Not quite as far as graham in yorks.
Any idea where the workshop closure was? Only keen to find out as there’s not that many places around that do good jobs n might be able to whittle it down if it was a good/bad rebuild.
Like Craig says Alan’s not been around for a while but Marty should if you PM him your VIN be able to tell you what’s what in them
Damn wish I had known about Eurospec as just brought the car home from near there lol…
Car is only just registered in this country ( 24/10/14 ) as it was imported with a gearbox fault & went straight into the workshop to have that done then sat the 10 years before bloke retired & car was purchased by the chap I got it off…I will message him & see if he knows more details about the garage…
Will pm Marty the details anyway as any help/info is a huge bonus.
Will say though that this is the cleanest 23 year old un restored car I have ever seen & I’ve been into Classic/custom cars for 30 years …Its got 93k KM on the clock & is totally standard & still has all of the Japanese stickers ect on everything in the car & under the bonnet & the engine runs superb, everything (apart from gearbox ) works & aircon is still ice cold, it even has the Jap snow tyres on it still lol.
Welcome to the club, get some pics up of your pride an joy, most of us love ogling at an unmolested car.
Mega good news after speaking to Eurospec I now need to get a decent replacement Auto box for my car as soon as I have one its off to them to be fitted as it works out a damn sight cheaper to do it this way than have to transport it up to Graham to be done there as Eurospec is only 65 miles from me.
Pictures will be posted once I get a membership sorted out & have given the car a quick mop over.
So if anyone has a decent Auto Box to fit a 1991 NA GTO please let me know how much for it…
Oh & if anyone has a bottom part for a standard airbox then please give me a shout as mines missing?? lol
I also need the parcel shelf load cover thingy & a spare wheel as they seem to be missing too…
Final one I need to change the speedo face over to MPH & fit a convertor/delimiter on this as its still as it arrived from Japan, has anyone got a link for the speedo face’s ( I want one with more than 120mph on it as that seems a bit lame ) & is it the same convertor/delimiter as the FTO’s get fitted with ? & does anyone have a pic of where on the box/loom it should be fitted please?
Oh just in case anyone knows someone after an FTO I am selling my slightly modified FTO Mivec as I’ve run out of places to park vehicles lol…I did try to find a for sale section on here but nope could not see one? so hope this is ok to add to my post?
Its listed on EBay…
Cheers andy I did look at it but not after an auto but its nice
For the speedo converter, your current speedo should read to 180kph yeah? In which case there is no need to change the dial. Just get a signal converter (Dakota I think is the most common brand) which will step the signal down by 5/8. This will mean that 30mph will show as 30kph on the gauge giving you a 180mph speedo. A sticker over the “kph” marker to say “mph” might be needed.
Excellent stuff thank you very much for that info, I will have a search for them in a bit, unless someone has a link?.. Do the GTO’S come into the country restricted like the FTO’s ?
My little FTO looks like its sold as someone coming down tomorrow for it, happy days lol…
I order my Autobox on Monday off Graham ( wanted to order today but they aint open again till Monday )… plus a load of other bits I needed for the car so its fingers crossed he can get it to me by Wed at the latest as I can get it booked into Eurospec for Thursday/Friday to be fitted & then its all on the road again for the Weekend YAY !
Sounds cool dude fingers crossed it all goes to plan
Just paid my Subs so now a Full member…
FTO is gone so now got time & some extra money to concentrate on the GTO…
Hi,
Welcome to GTOUK, great to speak to you today. Hope to see you at a meet soon.
Cheers,
Neil.
Car is in a local garage & soon as gearbox arrives tomorrow it gets fitted, cant wait lol…
Anyone tell me what the pcd etc is for the wheels as spotted a real nice set of wheels & have no idea if they would fit the GTO…
Hi CraigSorry I didn’t’ reply sooner but not been well and don’t go on the net like I used to… As you know I had bad eyesight which has got worse… Got myself a 32 inch monitor and even that I have to also zoom up a further 200% to read the screen… since last being on the old forum have also had what first appeared to be a dozen or more strokes causing me to loose control of either both or one of my arms or legs for a short time, one leaving me paralysed from my neck down for over 2 hours and last week suffered a small heart attack… Had blood tests, ecg which showed I had an enlarged heart and a number of x rays which the first one showed I had water on the lungs and a chest infection which puzzled the doctor as it should have needed tablets to clear it up but had gone on it’s own… I still have to install a new browser on my comp to be able to see the new forum… The post about the auto gear box has a number of things I could suggest but will take me some time to write up fully bit for now tell him the biggest sign of a TCU going down or is faulty is the car will thump into derive or reverse… he could try disconnect the TCU completely of out of the loom and see how it drives without a TCU which will confirm it’s not nessorcerilly the box at fault… a gto auto will drive without a TCU but only in limp mode… I’ll try and get myself sorted and on the new forum asp…Hope all is well with you and your family… alan
